Spotting At Zurich

Wed Jun 30, 2004 6:37 pm

Hi everyone,
what's the spotting potential like at Zurich?
I was thinking of spending a day there but will be on foot so was thinking of staying around the terminal.
I heard that there is a good platform at the airport. Is this still open post 9/11?
Also what do you think would be the best / most entertaining way of getting there from MAN?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello, first of all, posting this in the Photography forum would give you a lot replies! I suggested to move the topic there!

ZRH is amazing for spotting!

There's a viewing deck at Terminal B - Amazing location!

There's also a new terrace on the Midfield Terminal, but i think it's airside only...

Best way from MAN would be Swiss, wouldn't it?  Insane

I'd also love to visit Zurich. Is the viewing deck at Terminal B open air like the one that used to be open at LHR? It's not behind glass or anything?

The side on shot of the A330 is around 20-50mm !!! Very close!
The MD11 takeoff maybe 100-130mm - still, close.

Don't know about the other ones... I don't think more than 300mm!

Well that's definitely on my "To go to" list Big grin. I want to travel the world now I've got my own passport. Fares are a bit high though. Can't find anyone that goes direct to ZRH from EMA. MAN would be my second choice but BA and LX fares are pretty high. BA are even charging £160 from LHR!

The MD-11 was taken at 73mm (and add 1.6x cropfactor) which results in 116,8mm. This means that your guess was a very good one  Smile

Rolf s picture os SIA 747 is NOT from the parking deck and btw ist NOT parckingdeck nr 5, its either nr 1 or 3 ..... , and you definetely dont want to go to Dock E because of the light. If u r by foot be aware that from 12:30 the sun is against you on the T2 observation deck ...

just my 2c

robin

ps: gerry , got G-SMAN tonight 120 mins late at 20:20, lucky ... , till then.

Regarding zoom range: I only have a 75-300mm and a 28-200 lens. Both serve me well, although, with up to 400mm you would get more angles, albeit only marginal.

As Robin said, avoid Dock Midfield and the terrace on Terminal 2 (formerly known as Terminal B) after 12.00 (sun against you) .

Cheers
Gerardo

PS - Robin: will you be there next sat morning?

It wouldn't be the first time. Some years back, Swissair made a few low passes with an MD-11 over the Bellevue region. That was quite impressive.

CU sat morning, then.... and I mean early in the morning ......!!!

Well guys,
Thanks for all your advice. I decided that I would try a day out at ZRH after all.
Managed to get some great flights and a good deal on a hotel.

Just hope the weather stays good for my trip.

Hi Montague,
Thanks for the tip, but I managed to get the Renaissance (which is 5 star) for only GBP 55.

While we are on the subject of spotting at European airports, does anyone know whether I will have time to get to the spotting terrace at Frankfurt?
I Arrive at terminal 1 and have around 2hrs to spare.
Any advice and I would be grateful.

Speaking of ZRH accomodations ... has anyone tried the Allegra Hotel at Kloten? You must have great views from the upper floors. In this photo you can see it under engine No. 1.

John, 2 hours should be enough for the F*R*A deck if you arrive & depart from Terminal 1. It's not more than 10 minutes from the main concourses.

Hi all

I would recommend the Fly Away Hotel in Kloten.

Stayed there twice, nice rooms, good food and nice looking lady reception staff  Wink/being sarcastic

Free bus to and from the terminal. I 've also got the name and telephone number of a taxi service who, if required, will drop you off wherever you are around the perimeter of the airport and will pick you up wherever again at what time you agree. Really nice guy also. Taxi's are expensive though so plan into your budget.

Cheers

Yes, but they put Emmenthaler cheese in the burgers & the fries are too salty.  Angry

I second Ben Pritchard's recommendation, the free bus is great and it is perfect for being close to the heliport-there is also a nearby train station which will get you to the City in a few minutes and one stop in the other direction is the spotting area around the end of 16/34.

About the Allegra hotel: I stayed there a couple of months when i was working in Zurich but the views from the upper levels are not as good as you might think. No clear views to get from there.

Who wants to do some spotting from the Allegra Hotel? It's purely to stay overnight, isn't it?

No critisism, Peter!

FlySwiss

On the row where there is a motorcycle shop?

The FlyAway Hotel is really nice. I stayed there with Tony Silgrim. The food and beer was good also.

I have actually stayed there twice and the second time I noticed a few buildings have appeared around the area.

I would say if I went back to Zurich, I would probably pick that hotel once more.

Regards
