Which Aspect Ratio And Size To Choose.

Thu Jul 01, 2004 3:52 am

Hi all,
I´ve got some kind of problem here. With my Coolpix i worked with the rectangular marquee tool in PS with a fixed Aspect Ratio that used a width of 1,3 to a height of 1.
Now, with my D70, which produces pictures with 3008*2000px, it doesn´t really work out, if the plane i photograph fills almost the whole picture.
So i think i´ll go with a width of 1,5 to height 1.
What´s your opinion about that and what size do you think i should use?
1200x800?

TIA,

Denis

Hi Dennis,

I think a screener recently mentioned that the ratio of the uploads should be between 3:2 & 4:3. I find 3:2 more pleasing to the eye, but that's highly subjective. Depends also on the motive. As for the size, I like a width 1024px. Some people have argued that most PC users now have a bigger resolution, but I don't believe that.

The majority of my shots are uploaded @ 1024 x 632. I wish more people would choose 1024 x 650 or so, as 1024 by 768 is a giant waste of space on the vertical plain.

Oh, i thought i had to go with 1200*XXX because anything below 768 would be rejected. Guess i was wrong with that...

I'm cropping everything to 1200 x 900. It makes the crops sort of a pain, since any straight-on or side shot of a plane naturally creates a very horizontal picture and wastes a lot of vertical space. That said, I suspect these images are mostly viewed on monitors, and I don't want the full-screen view to end up being distorted.

Well, right now i´m trying some 3:2 ratio with a size of 1024*683.
See how that works out...

Royal, I tried uploading at a resolution like yours, but had it rejected for badsize. Most typical side shots look better, to me at least, in a more rectangular than square resolution.

A bunch of sky or tarmac at the top and bottom don't add anything in my opinion.

Personally I like the 3:2 ratio as this equates to the SLR/DSLR full-frame ratio, and matches a range of standard print sizes, though in practice I do vary slightly if the crop makes a difference to the shot.

On the one hand I admire the discipline of the skilled slide shooter who must compose to use an arbitray format to the best advantage ... on the other hand, why be a slave to an artifical constraint?

Cheers,

Colin, could you clear up the issue of pictures less than 1024x768? Apparently Royal is getting some in at 1024x632, but I had some rejected at a similar size awhile ago.

Hmm - think I'd best leave a definitive answer to a screener!

I'm not sure there has ever been a stated minimum height. A full frame image comes out at 1024x683, so that should always be acceptable (and is considerably less than 768), but I don't know how much thinner would be permitted.

Cheers,

Colin

Hi again.
I just finished my PS session and i´m pretty happy with the results. As stated above they are coming at 1024*683.
Here are some examples for you:

Keeping the 1024 pixel width, cropping to popular print sizes will give the following dimensions:

6"x4" = 1024x683
7"x5" = 1024x732
10"x8" = 1024x819

Just crop the image to best fit one of these sizes and you should be fine.

Sorry Colin, I just thought you knew everything. Guess not.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I think my next uploads will be at 1024x683, and hope they aren't rejected for badsize.

After reading this, I will alter my upload sizes as well to match the 3:2 AR. Right now, I upload at 1600 x 1200, a size that stems from the computer geek side of me. My photos make great wallpaper  Smile/happy/getting dizzy My laptop also runs at that resolution, and the 1024 size seems miniscule to me. But yes, other people do run that low still, and I tend to forget that.

Now, question: how do I figure out other resolution sizes with the aspect ratio in mind? I'd still prefer to go greater than 1024.

Mriya, one thing to consider when uploading at a higher resolution such as 1600x1200, is that it makes it easier for someone to print or use the photo at higher quality without paying you.

Bronko Too true. Duly noted, en kossonyok! I'm sure I spelled that wrong though. My hungarian is rustier than a used car that's been through a few wisconsin winters!

I'm pretty sure my dad was through the Hungarian revolution as well. In fact, I do believe he was. Anyway, I'll stop hijacking the thread now :P

Just use the crop tool, select the dimensions in inches, 7"x5", 6"x4", 10"x8" etc. and then drag the box to select your crop. Left click and crop. After that, go to Image>Image size, and punch in 1600 for the width. The height amount will change automatically to fit the aspect.

I agree with Bronko, a 1600 pixel wide image makes a very nice 8"x10" print right from this website....

I uploaded some photos last night at 1024x632, I like working with that size. It minimizes the dead area above and below the photo. Lets hope they aren't rejected for badSize, since Royal is able to get shots in at that size.

Hi, i got around 20 shots accepted at 1024*683 and none of my rejected photos had badsize as a reason.
