Join The A.net Crew! Become A Photo Screener!

Tue Jul 13, 2004 2:58 am

Hello all,

Time has come again for Airliners.net to advertise for new photo screeners. A thousand or more photos are added daily and we need to expand to be able to handle the load. You've all seen the size of the upload-queue lately and a long queue is bad for photographers and Airliners.net alike.

So, with no further ado, here's the requirements. A position as a screener on Airliners.net is an important one and therefore, the requirements are high:

  • You need to have uploaded to Airliners.net for some time and understand what we're looking for in photos. You probably have quite a lot of photos already in our database and have very few rejections.
  • Lots and lots of spare time for all foreseeable future. Screening is a time demanding business and we need to be able to count on your ability to screen on average at least about an hour every day. You need to make photo screening on Airliners.net part of your aviation hobby.
  • Ability to work in a group and abide to the decisions taken by the group. The screening on Airliners.net is conducted by rules that all photo screeners have to follow whether you like them or not. You are a mature team player and when you feel you have problems with another crew member you work actively to resolve it and do not spend time on childish bickering.
  • When the going gets tough, the Airlines.net screeners gets going. We need to be able to depend on you in the good times but especially in the bad times. When the queue is never ending and the harsh comments from photographers are everywhere we need you to stick to the job and don't give up.
  • Total integrity. You will treat all photos by all photographers the same. You may like or dislike particular photographers but that should not be mirrored in your screening. The good reputation of Airliners.net is dependent on a screening crew with integrity and just screening.
  • When you work on Airliners.net you give us 100%. You may not do similar work on competing sites. You are also an individual to be trusted. You should be able to keep sensitive information to yourself.
  • Not be afraid to speak up. A rejection or acceptance that you do not agree with should be discussed on the screener mailinglist. It is important that you are willing to say your mind in a constructive manner whenever you disagree with the decisions taken by other screeners.
  • You absolutely love aviation photography. Don't apply for the status or crew membership. We want you to be with us in the long run and totally enjoy screening. For that to work aviation photography needs to be an important part of your life.

Please note: We only want you application if you are able to fulfill all the above requirements.

As a photo screener you will be part of the crew of the biggest aviation website on the Internet with over 100,000 people visiting every day. You will get a crew account with First Class access free. Being a photo screener also means you get to see a heck of a lot of aviation photos from all over the world and you'll be the first one to see all the new stuff.

Sounds interesting? Don't hesitate to apply, we need you!

Send your application to screenerapplication@airliners.net and include some short information about yourself and how you match up to the requirements listed above.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Regards,
Johan & the screening crew
Working on the site from morning 'till night that's livin' alright (1997-2007)

Great!! Finally the queue will become faster!

Well I can't apply simply because I only have 3 in the db.... :-( Oh well  Smile

My dad is a professional photographer but he doesn't have a username and only 3 pics in the db too

I'd be more than willing though  Big thumbs up  Wink/being sarcastic

Great development!

Also would love to consider this too but at this point not enough pictures in the db and still too many rejections (I'm still learning here).

Kind regards,

I think it is unfortunate that nobody is allowed to apply if they choose to donate their time to other sites as well, which seems a little discriminatory when current crew members do exactly that (as well they are entitled to in their free time).

BTW, why are other sites referred to as "competing" sites, competing for what exactly?

Atco, I think he means other aviation photography-related sites. If you help out on a termite-control site, I doubt that counts.

At least I would think that's the case!

In the future, I would like to be a screener. Right now though, only around 48 in the db and an up and down rejection rate (either most accepted in one shot or most rejected..)

How about preliminary screeners, screeners that take care of the major problems (obviously blurry, dark, bright, grainy, not level, really poor motive, etc) to lighten the load on the more pro screeners? There are lots of photographers who'd love to help in some sort of screening but maybe still have too high a reject rate or not enough photos. Maybe we can still help with the obvious stuff?
Currently not active in aviation photography or this site. Thank you for your interest.

Mriya,

I understand, however I do not understand why donating free time to any other website regardless of its content should disbar you from applying. Surely it is up to the individual how he/she utilises his/her free time...........after all this is just a hobby isn't it?

Again it seems a little odd that current crew members are permitted to do exactly what potential new applicants are not.

Anyway the criteria are clear and up front and that's fair enough.

I could be the PERFECT SCREENER!!

I have a handle on what pics are accepted and what pics aren't:

Accepted: Those not uploaded by me
Rejected: The pics that I upload

I think I fit the profile, except for the "screen at least 1 hour a day"-criteria. I am on this site a lot, but that's while doing other things at the same time. On many days I would be able to dedicate 1 hour, but I can't guarantee a consistant pattern.

Garry,

Its all about non-disclosure Johan is quite right to protect his site, you know what photographers are like when they get together  Wink/being sarcastic

The rules were changed after I joined, Johan hated it that I used to screen for another site Big grin

I believe it is Andy Martin (Skymonster). He's growing a beard in preparation for his trip to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, home of Sasquatch.

Now he just needs to learn to drive too slow in the fast lane, wear fleece and learn the difference between a Skinny Tall Macchiato and a Double Short Mocha Valencia.

Hello all,

Time has come again for Airliners.net to advertise for new photo screeners.

How about screeners getting paid fot their hard work....
Maybe not in cash but they deserve to get something from all these commercial ads appearing on A.net and shares from pictures sold.

How many is "quite a lot" and how many is "Very few"?

How many is "quite a lot" and how many is "Very few"?

Well... One isn't very many, one thousand is quite a lot. Without wanting to pre-empt Johan offering further guidance on this matter, in previous recruitments 100 was mentioned. Please note it says "probably" which if we take that word as per dictionary definition suggests that the requirement to have a lot of pictures on the database isn't hard-set. I'd guess it partly depends on the quality of what you have on the database, what else you have to offer, and the quality of the other candidates.

Johan--

How about instead of telling people to screen objectively regardless of the photographers name, prior history, etc., Why don't you remove the photographers name, add a special unique code and have the screening begin that way?

Solves:
-- Screeners rejecting "novice" photographers work.
-- Screeners rejecting based on name recognition alone.
-- Screeners accepting cronies photos.
-- Keeps photo pool fresh.
-- New photographers use fresh styles, older screeners may reject based on their own school of thought.

Perhaps a systemic rehaul is in order.

Many people would agree.
