One For The AMS Boys From Sydney.

Tue Jul 13, 2004 12:59 pm

Finally got around to getting down to the beach to try out my 100-400L after like 6 months.
Thought the AMS team may like this shot as its similar to some of there incredible shots although with a slightly better(IMHO) background to shoot against.

This angle alone really shows off the 100-400L and what it can do given the right conditions and one of my best photo's to date.
With Glenn back in town hopefully we can provide a bit more competition to the great team of guys in AMS who keep pumping out the awesome shots week after week.
For the AMS guys,keep up the great work.
Cheers

Thanks for reminding about this angle Darren. Haven't uploaded any for quite a while now. :P
You're right, you can't beat that background... Hopefully I can try it out myself in october when I'll be in Sydney.  Smile

G'day Wietse
What Rwy is that KLM shot on.
The reflections always seem a little better there han anything i can get here so i think its got something to d with runway/sun alignment.

Yea joining the long list of people on the Dash who attempting to further our careers elsewhere such as Dragon,CX,Brunei etc.
Dash drivers are loved by everyone except the people who own our aeroplanes.A most unfortunate situation for our employer as we had an enormous turnover the last two years in the order of >35% of out total crew compliment.
Money elsewhere kills QF as well so its OS hopefully in the next 12 months or so.

Hi Pete
Yes OS as in OverSeas,the money being paid to QF gus is a fair bit less than to many of the operators around the Asiapacific area.
Seems we have a bit of a sweet spot for those tight rear 3 quarter shots.
Thanks Wietse Rwy 24? The sun must almost be on the nose of the aircraft as they look like late afternoon when you get the best light for your shots.
At YSSY its Rwy 34L so the sun is at 90 degrees giving pretty harsh light compared to the AMS shots.
Anyway great shots all and i thik we have settled on the signature shot of AMS is the rear quarter view.
Great shots everyone!!

Great to see another one for Syd Brendan.
Your A330 shots where great that went up over the last couple of days,i loved the High ISO stuff.
I think AMS and Syd have a few things in common.
First off very similar signature shots ours with the city backdrop and AMS with the great blue although some get some great cloud action.
Syd and AMS seem to attract some excellent photographers as home base,the list of people i could line up would be to long to mention for both airports.
I won't mention any for fear of leaving someone out!!
Seeing some of the stuff that comes in keeps you motivated to see exactly what the limits are of your equipment are so thanks to all.
Take it easy

Well it's great to be back in Sydney, but I have fond memories of my single AMS day. Pity about the weather, but it probably made the day even more memorable.

I'm sure in a 15 minute period I had:
* Sun and Cloud
* Heat and Cold
* Rain and No Rain
* Wind and Still

I was going between 4 layers of clothing and raincoat through to a single layer. The Amsterdam weather couldn't make up its mind.
(TruckWorld saved me from some of the rain)

--

Apart from easy photography and lots of A.net shots (yes, these go hand in hand)... I think Sydney and Amsterdam have among the two oldest international airports... Likewise their home airlines, KLM and Qantas are the two oldest airlines (effectively).

The age of Sydney's airport makes it the smallest in terms of area of any of the capital cities of Australia (includes Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Darwin, Canberra). This is due to the fact that way back when the airport was built, it was almost the edge of suburbia. If you've been to Sydney now, you'd realise that it's almost on the doorstep of the city.

I was amazed by the massive size of AMS.
Any of the AMS guys have a neat map that could post here just for reference?

--

Okay now for the plug...

Not too bad. I wish I'd be there for a few days (yes, I could have tag teamed with another Sydney local, Sam "Gotta Love Ramp" Chui). Now having been to AMS, I know I'll be back.
I'll certainly be back before the canals grow fences.

hmmm you guys are all so lucky, I have to travel to Sydney for 2 hours by car if I wanna shoot some interesting aircraft

Canberra is the land of the 737 and Dash8 - there is only so many of them you can shoot before you get bored  Smile

We just got our first international flights twice weekly (Air Pacific) but that has lost its charm already for photography hehe

No L lense while I was away... but my budget didn't blow out and thinking about buying an L lens as soon as possible.

My now-fiance (I proposed in Venice) realises that the L lense comes before the purchase of the rock mounted on a ring (I've got her something in the meantime to whet the appetite).

Well done Glenn!!
Couldn't of thought of a better place to pop the big question myself.
You'll just have to explain to her mum why a white lens comes before a big diaimond and that will take some doing.
Big trip in more was than one!!

She's smart enough to keep that to herself. She has a semi understanding of how important it is to me, but most people simply say "how much!!!??!!!? - You're kidding me.... you'd spend that much on a lens!".

So one of the highlights of the trip was Venice. AMS was fantastic. LHR was an absolute dog. More on that in another post though.
Actually, I'll post that now....

Wow,

Those are all very nice photo's. I can only dream of such photo's. I have a Canon EOS300 camera with a 28-90 mm lense, as well as a 75-300 mm lense. Somehow I can't get good quality photo's like all of you have. Whenever I upload my photo's to airliners.net, they all get rejected. Can anyone give me some advice as to how I can use my camera in a better way? Here's a link to my website with my aircraft photo's:

http://rogereuropeanaviation.freeservers.com

For anyone who lives in Holland or visits Holland on a regular basis, can we meet at the spectator's terrace at Schiphol Airport sometime, so I can get aircraft spotting instructions? I would really appreciate it as I really would like to upload my photo's to airliners.net.

Kind regards,

A388
