Suitable Tele-lenses And Zooms For Canon EOS 300D

Wed Jul 14, 2004 4:27 am

Dear fellow photographers,

I am going to switch from my Olympus C-730UZ to a Canon EOS 300D.

What is the most effectful telezoom for aviation photography in respect of
sharpness and other quality criteria. What are your experiences with the 300D?
Thank you all in advance and happy shooting.
Best regards,

There are almost as many different lenses in use on 300D's as there are photographers on this forum.  Smile And everybody will tell you their lens is great. To prevent you from getting lost in the forest of lenses:

What is your budget?

Cheers,
Eduard

Since I bought the 300D I have the same question as you... But I think I found an answer now!!!

I started with the low budget version Tamron 70-300 which is rather cheap but image quality is not that great. Also slow and unprecise AF is a problem with this lens. After that I tried a lot. I bought Sigma APO II 70-300 which is ok and has also a good price but it wasn't good enough for me. I also had some AF problems with this one.

Then I lend a Canon 28-300 IS USM! This was the best I've ever had on my cam but if you check out the price: 2300€!!! Thats way too much I think.
So I tried the smaller sister the 75-300 IS USM! And I bought it some days ago and I'm very very happy with it. It has a precise AF, picture stabilizer and a great picture quality also beween 200-300mm...

Go for it, if you can afford it, if not get the Canon 75-300 USM III! Half the price without the stabilizer but also good picture quality.

Hope this helps...

Regards, Werner

Thank you all for your advices. Meanwhile I ordered a Tokina 80-400 which is used by a lot of DUS-spotters and they all are very happy with it.

I got a 75-300 USM III for my 300D, but as WERNAIR said if you have a little more to spend get the 75-300 IS USM.

And the 100-400 L IS but a bit well OK a lot more expensive, and don't forget the 170-500 by Sigma.

Yep... let's not forget the venerable Sigma 170-500... a cracking lens for the price! I'll not post any thumbnails but please feel free to peruse my shots for examples of what the Sigma 170-500 can do.

Cheers!

The Canon 70-200 F4 L pleases the photographic Gods, and is very reasonably priced as well.

Plus, it is just the right size for a coffee table ornament/dinnertime conversation piece.
It takes a big man to admit they are wrong, and I am not a big man.

How about the Tamron 28-300 mm XR? It gives great flexibility but does anyone have any idea of the quality it produces?

Thanks.

Stay away from hyperzooms. divide the max zoom by the min zoom. If that number is higher than 4-5, it will suck. There are ofcourse exceptions, but they are very very expensive.

Thanks for the tip Wietse. The one I mentioned is around $400 so it probably won't be of good quality.

Good hyperzooms, like the 28-300 L IS from Canon, cost a lot of money, 2300 euros.

Wietse,

Just the other day I was talking to a professional photographer and he was explaining me about the Canon L series lenses. He had a good collection of those and others. They are indeed very expensive.

Hope I'm not hijaking the thread.

All the best.

Yup, I have 2, but I shot with 4 different kinds of L lenses, and they are amazing. Extremely solid

I have a 55-200 USM lens, which quite great for a 300D, I definitely recomment it.
Although, having used over the last few days a 70-200 L, I would also recommend that one a lot if you can afford it.

Cheers,

707cmf means the f/4.0 70-200L btw and not the Rocket launcher f/2.8 IS 70-200 L which costs the price of a small car Big grin
