10D Not Focusing

Sun Jul 18, 2004 10:37 am

My 10D is not focusing what it will do is focus all the way in then all the way out then it will lock but it will be out of focus. It happens in all three focus modes. I don't want to start a Canon VS Nikon issue please.
Any way I cleaned the contacts even got with Brian Casity and put my lens on his camera and it focused like it was supposed to.
So I called Canon and I am going to send it back it is under warranty.
My question is has this happened to any one here and what was the problem?

Again please no Canon VS Nikon issue.

I got the same problem but with my 300D, only with the central AF point though, when I use all 7 points which I don't like to do it works fine. I still haven't returned the camera.

I had the problem, but, I took a pencil eraser and rubbed the contacts of both the lens and camera and it works fine now.

Good luck!

I had that problem with a Canon 10D and Tamron lens, but once I went all Canon, the problem went away.

I've had a few problems in regards to focusing on my 10D. Just seems like a lot of my shots aren't focused, bottom line.

I've been blaming it on lighting, because I often end up shooting close to sunset, so I jsut assumed it was that, maybe jsut me giving myself and excuse and don't get scared that something might be wrong with my camera.

Rock the warranty, though. Sounds worth it.

Maybe this will help;

It seems that quite a few 10D's have focus problems...

I have the biggest focus problems with simple, straightforward shots. Airplanes haven't been much of a problem (at least, nothing I can blame on the camera), but put a group of objects on a table and I can't seem to get a sharp shot on them. Happens with both my Canon and Sigma lenses. I contacted the commercial photog I use for work--he's also got a 10D--and he's experienced the same problem with his, so I know it isn't just me.

After prowling the 'net and some of Canon's forums (I forgot where I found them now), I learned that a lot of users have experienced this, and it seems there are firmware upgrades available on Canon's website that may or may not address the issue. I haven't tried one yet because I did a focus test in the meantime and the camera didn't do badly. Here's the one I tried:

http://www.photo.net/learn/focustest/

Considering that I'm still fairly new to digital photography, I decided it made sense to not get too hung up on this until I got more experience with this camera. It does seem as though things are improving for me, but your mileage may vary--please post back if you learn anything new.

I've been lucky so far, but I have noticed a tendency for my 300D to do this in poor weather. I just put it down to low contrast. It's not proven to be an especially big problem, touch wood.
It takes a big man to admit they are wrong, and I am not a big man.

My 10D is not focusing what it will do is focus all the way in then all the way out then it will lock but it will be out of focus. It happens in all three focus modes.

My 10D started doing this over the weekend at Farnborough. I had an excellent day there on the Friday and the camera was performing as expected. However on the Saturday the same symptoms as Paul describes above started to happen.

I was covering the Red Arrows and found that the focusing would hunt for the subject and effectively give up with the servo flicking back and forth slightly with the subject completely out of focus. This happens with my 300 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8 and with the extenders too. Also in all the focusing modes.

That evening I cleaned the contacts on all my lenses and the camera in the hope that this would resolve the issue. It didn't and I had the same troubles the following day.

The camera is fully functional in normal situations. If I quickly flick from one subject to another the focusing is quick to adjust. The problem seems to be with picking up and tracking small moving objects. Once locked on it was fine, but that initial focusing is definitely suspect.

Paul has sent his back to Canon and is awaiting results and I am about to do the same.

I'll be interested to hear if this becomes more common.

Oh great just as i am starting to think about upgrading my kit this nice thread comes along. Just to make it worse i met Martin at London Heathrow and was very impressed with his camera and photo's. Infact i was looking at the same type of camera. Now i see he's also having problems.

I think im going to hold fire until Canon or anyone else confirms this problem. I don't want to spend £1000 on a Camera and £1000 on a lens and end up with a complete lemon that won't focus. I may aswell save my money and keep the S7000 !!!!!

Is it just me or am i expecting to much to ask for a camera that works when you spend over £1000.00  Yeah sure

Canon sell so well now, that maybe Quality Control are having troubles keeping up? I would still get one if I was you LHRSIMON, I think chances are you'll get a good sample, most Canon-users I know never had any troubles (although some are suffering Err99s ;o).
what seems to be the officer, problem?

Simon, I have used a 10D for well over a year now and the only problems I have had are error codes when using the Canon 100-400L at near vertical angles.
This has been error1 which the manual describes as the contacts need cleaning...hmmm they are very clean.

For the amount of 10D's Canon has sold I feel if the problem was on a mass scale then they would of addressed this by now with later cameras. Especially with the DSLR market growing and Nikon producing similar models.

If your that worried buy a 1D MKII...  Nuts

Cheers,
Ian.

If I had the funds I'd have one myself, new lens first I think..!  Smile

If it's going to be a few months then you may find a secondhand 10D for less money, unless you want a new one of course...?

To add an update to this thread.

I contacted Paul who originally started this thread and he replied saying that Canon had checked out his camera and found that it only needed a clean. They charged $200 for the pleasure too!

Upon Paul's advise not to send my trusty (usually) 10D back to Canon, I gave it good clean inside and out along with a clean up of the lens contacts and went testing at LHR this weekend.

I haven't really be able to test it properly as your typical airliner is much slower and a damn sight bigger than and F-18 or Hawk that first gave me the troubles. Having said that it worked perfectly well over this weekend and even picked up over flying stuff with no trouble.

Fingers crossed this was the resolution as the warranty is out now!

Regards
Martin
