My 5 Year Old Son's First Pic On A.net!

Mon Jul 19, 2004 8:00 am

Well, it may not be the best picture that has ever graced this website, but for me it is the one that I am most proud of.

Last week I went to Shanghai airport with my five year old son, Julian and we decided to take some photos. I was armed with a Nikon D70 and he got to use a Fuji S1 Pro. At first, he was having trouble centering the aircraft in the frame, cutting off noses and tails all over the place. I explained what he had to do and he corrected this, but the result was horizons that were all over the place. Finally once this got explained, he got the hang of it and produced the following:

Now when I got home I of course needed to rotate approx 1 degree and then crop "slightly" but basically for a five year old, I think he did a fine job....

Andy,

You ain't never gonna see me in Shanghai now-too much competition.....on the other hand it's about time someone with Canon gear showed you two how to take pictures with a real camera Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Would be nice if he was the youngest. I was really surprised at how quickly he picked it up. Of course, there were a few tense moments, where Dad started to get irritated at his lack of "centering"... Big grin but after an hour or so, it all paid off.

Now he is asking when he can go next to take more pics......finally, the awayday pass which I have to keep asking for from the Prime Minister is now an easy sell!

Matt: Canon, nah, my son won;t ever find out about that Big grin

Scott,

Pardon me, what is it you are asking? Big grin

How did a 5 year old take a photo? Easy, pick up the camera, aim and shoot (with Daddy screaming furiously behind him Big grin )

Congrats, Andrew and Julian!

I have two nieces and I am proud of everything they learn! I understand You, and I cannot wait until I have kids picking up my hobbies. Especially in music, but also photography. I really get what You are feeling and I can tell, it is a great feeling!

Keep on, Julian.

BTW, does he already know about screeners and hot difficult it is to get past them?  Big grin

Andrew, that's really great! You have indeed reason enough to be the proudest father on earth. And Julian..that's a great pic. I expect more to follow.

(My nine months old daughter still doesn't really understand what the front and the backend of the camera is. But she loves planes anyway)

Well, you did a good job as a teacher, and he is a good student too  Big grin

I have an almost 2 year-old grandson. I've already got him pointing to the sky whenever a jet flies over. Soon, he and I will be making day-trips to the airport and I'll be instructing him in the fine art of getting rejections.

I'm just thinking about all those poor experts with their expensive equipment, lots of photographing experience and hours of photographing lessons whining about getting nothing but rejections at a.net  Big grin

@Andy: Are you not afraid that he will ask for a Nikon D2H & VR70-200/2.8 for christmas ?

congrats to your son and also to you. It is certainly not easy to teach a young kid how to use a camera properly, so I can perfectly understand your pride when effort and patience paid off! Looking forward to see more photos from the Hunt family  Smile

Correct Tim,

Have to start them early. We have to prepare the next generation of enthusiasts.

I was actually thinking that with all of the things on offer to kids today, that there was a real danger of this hobby biting the dust, or becoming the niche of the niche type pursuit. However, with the internet, and so many aviation websites out there, I believe that my fears are unfounded Big grin

Thank God!

Andrew, congratulations with your son's pictures, and I truely hope you teach him to have fun, and like it before you teach him to get shots accepted just for the sake of it, but then again, I don't doubt that you're ahead of me on that one.  Big thumbs up

Well we went again yesterday...........and he got better, there was one pic (already put in the queue) that basically required minimal cropping and rotating about 0.5 degree Big grin

Then he wanted to use the 170-500 lens, photograph landing aircraft and at that point...........I knew he was hooked Big grin

ciao andy,

also from me: congrats to little Julian for getting his 1st pic accepted at A.net. Must be pretty cool for you to get your son infected with the Spottervirus .... , does make a lot of things much more easier.
Well yesterday my wife and me got to know that it will be a girl .... , but as Joe metioned above, I think it is also possibel to infect a daugther with the virus. Time will tell ......

Robin : That's great news, glad to hear that everything is going well for you

Joe : Girls can play as well! You're going to start her on slide. Get ready to burn some film (and money). Digital first my friend, let her waste away the pixels...and then switch her, but by that time there may not be anymore slide film Big grin

Anyway Gents, all children are a blessing and the joy that they bring outweighs anything in this hobby. But as I said, when you put the kid and the hobby together......dynamite!

Andy good point on digital first- i was trying to say that slides first makes you more disciplined, but you are right- no need to waste slide film on trash shots  Big grin
