LTN & STN Spotting?

Thu Jul 22, 2004 8:49 pm

I wonder about the current situation at these 2 airports.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

  • Are there any problems with the police/security?

  • Best places to take photos, without using a car? How to get there?

  • Which focal lengths are needed at each place? Please post examples with different lenses used!!

  • Something else to be aware of?

Thanks in advance!  Big thumbs up

    /Johan

    Hi Johan.
Have been at STN at the beginning of this year for spotting. There shall be some good spots on the opposite of rwy seen from the terminal. We went by foot about 30mins. from the terminal to the right and tried to follow the fence. The ground there was very dirty and wet, but at the ned we ound a place under the final approach of rwy 23 (I think it was 23), form there we could see every arriving aircraft (only EZY and FR 737). I'm using the Olympus C-750 with 380mm zoom but needed less. Here are some examples from this day.

But after an hour or more we were told by the police to move away. Happened to all places we visited and were we took pictures. Wasn't not easy, but police was very very friendly. As I can remember there was a small hill next to the maintanance area on the left of the terminal, but maybe the same problem with police.

    Hope that helped a bit.
    Bye, Georg.

Been spotting at STN last summer, quite difficult.... Good spots are not around the terminal... 1 is on the other side of the runway, the others are just for approach shots, like Georg took them.

Also, the traffic during the day is not THAT great. I've been there for 4hrs of shooting, 737s all the way, mostly Ryanair, EasyJet and GO. The only good thing we had was the Asiana B744F.

LTN should be better in terms of spots.

The first shot is a 5 minute walk from the terminal towards the airport exit(just follow the hill down basically). From here most of the passenger flights can be caught on camera although Britannia and some charter airlines park where the Air Luxor shot was taken. This is RIGHT next to the terminal and is good in the afternoon onwards.

This is probably the third main spot without going round to the far side of the airport and getting takeoff/landing shots(very long walk from the terminal I would think.)Generally this part of the airport sees an interesting couple of bizjets parked up and you will have to go up to the security barrier to take such shots but as long as you tell the security dudes what you're doing they never seem to mind.

When are you thinking of going?

I will probably be there (LTN) on August 14th.

Every now and then I read things about people having problems with the security at these airports, have you locals any comments about that??

I'm no local there, but when being at STN, a police car was driving by from time to time, but they just smiled out of their car.... maybe they didn't stop because it was raining  Laugh out loud

I very much doubt you will have any trouble from the Police at LTN at all. When I was there in March, one came upto us, took the car registration and drivers details and then started to talk about our cameras! When a plane came, he told us to get our photos!

One of the nicest cop's ive ever met!

As a regular visitor to LTN (only a 30min drive from home) I have never met a bad policeman. Sometimes they come up and take your details other times they don't bother. But if you are polite to them you will have no problems.

The best shots are from round the south side, you may be able to get a lift around there from one of the local spotters, worth asking  Smile

The sun is behind/overhead you all day up until around 1800hrs at this time of year.

So, is there actually a (official?) security difference between LTN and STN for spotting, or was the STN report just an one-off thing?

Johan, you'll have no problems at LTN, that's for sure. I have just got back from there, managed to get the 2 evening Wizz flights, new for me! If you mail me I can give you some better info. LTN was my local for a number of years.

Talking with Michael Catchpole (STN local) I get the feeling that STN is tighter on security than LTN.

As Spencer has written, you won't be bothered at all at LTN.

    Cheers,
    Ian.

STN's main cause of concern, as I mailed you Johan, is that it is the UK's premier choice for high-jacking diversions and such. Having said that though, I have never been bothered there.

    Slightly off topic

I gave him fake info anyway

    Why?

I'm afraid I don't understand this lack of respect for authority, especially when you are doing something the police at that location probably have no problem with anyway.

There are plenty of threads on the forums about possible new laws in the UK that may curtail our hobby, and about airports generally getting less spotter friendly. Why give the people who would stop us more ammunition?

Everything worked out as planned, so I spent some 5 hours spotting at LTN on Saturday, and nearly 10 hours at STN on Sunday.

No problems at all with security/police during this trip, and I had to send a big "Thank You" to those of you who posted into this thread / mailed me privately about this matter, it was a great help.
