Fascination Of Uploading @ Larger Sizes. Why?

Wed Aug 04, 2004 8:11 am

Why is there this alarming trend of photogs uploading more and more shots at large sizes (talking wider than 1024 pixels)?

It's such a waste. If you are reading this, and wondering if I am talking about you, I probably am Big grin

Take a look at the accomplised shooters at this site, and see how many of them upload at wider than 1024 pixels. Maybe the odd (high quality) shot, or something worthy of a longer look, but this trend of everything being uploaded at 1300 pixels in bananas.

I might have 7 tops... at least 4 of them were my air refueling shots. IMHO, I feel that they warranted it. Most of mine are 1024x683.

By uploading larger than 1024 size, you give unauthorized pirates more pixel resolution to infringe on your copyright.

Yeah, most people keep their monitors at a resolution of 1024 wide, so I get annoyed when I have to scrool sideways to see these shots.

Personal peeve, no big deal, but I just don't get it. It even lowers visual quality sometimes.

Some of them do warrant a larger size,

but since you are probably talking about me, I resized my last edit of that CO 738 down to 1024x768  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I have others in the q that I feel do warrant 1280x1024

Just a quick question, if I were to upload a picture at 1024 x 768, would it be better to:

A: take the shot at a higher resolution and shrink it

B. take the shot at 1024 x 768

Higher res and shrink it.

Side on shots of UAL 737's dont warrant huge photo sizes...Chad's air to air stuff is special, pictures of common planes landing in common conditons aren't.

Get a 95% acceptance rate at the smaller sizes before you go big.

I've only got two and I'm sure one of them inspired you to make this thread:

Photo © Justin Idle

I only did 1600 on this one because the 747 is a large plane and I thought a large resolution was warranted. Read my remark on it.

Full blown resolution of 1600 so you may appreciate the size of this plane. Taxiing across the Heitzelman bridge after landing on 35R. Canon 300D, 168mm, 1/500, F8, ISO 100

This one I just made 1300 because it was a beautiful aircraft IMHO and if you resize it to 1024, it makes it more difficult to see the reflections on the plane.

I don't do this too often as you may notice from my other photos.

The other good point of NOT having too large resolution is prevent someone steal a shot and use it unauthorised...  Big grin

Wait...so WHY shouldn't we upload any bigger than 1024?

Forget the fact that it may be special. All my shots, regardless of how unique and significant a small number of them may be, are uploaded at 1024 simply because it provides the best tradeoff between quality (and even then, I'll be lucky to get it accepted) and the satisfaction of A.net requirements.

And as it's also the most widley used screen resolution, it solves the issue of 'FITSCR'-viewed photos looking like poo.

It still baffles me how this one guy, Same Chui I think his name is, has uploaded a buttload at 1000 wide. What gives?  Big grin

Larger photos are still held to the maximum file size of 1024 KB. So a larger photo requires further jpeg compression to stay under the maximum file size, which means less quality.

Another reason to stay around 1024 x whatever. I have a few photos at 1200 x 800, but it was for cropping purposes only.

Ever take a photo where you simply cannot crop the plane properly at 1024 x 768? I manage to do so once in awhile.  Smile

Oh no! Another hot topic from Clickhappy  Laugh out loud

Fascination Of Uploading @ Larger Sizes. Why?

People want to get their pictures stolen more easily! Or let other people download their pictures, crop the a.net copyright, store them in a CD, go to the lab and print them in a good poster quality, then hang them on the wall! And what did the photographer got from this? Nothing!

I think that 1024 is rather small and 1600 is too big, unless it's special. So I've been sticking to 1200 without major problems.

Since I don't have a wall-to-wall computer monitor, it's really annoying viewing those large pictures (and that is anything over 1024) - you can only see part of the picture and you have to - and that is the most irritating part - scrolling...

When a 'large' picture opens I don't even wait until it is downloaded.

So dear photographers, remember next time that you have an audience, please make the viewing experience a comfortable one. We hate those scroll bars.

ciao guys,

I am all 1200 x 800 here ...... , if I want to show something different or just like the picture very much, and quality is very good I take 1600 ... but anyhow , really dont care , what size you upload as long the overall quality is good. and btw : pictures get stolen everyday, doesnt matter if 1024 or 1200 , though chances are higher if you upload at 1600.
would guess 95% of my pictures at 1200, the rest at 1600 ..

While people may scarf a few photos if you upload them larger then 1024 x *** size, the resolution is still 72 dpi on screen, so they won't be printing them much larger then 5 x 7 or max 8 x 10. I would doubt anyone gets any in a magazine straight from here. For me it's just a convienence thing... I like to open a picture and have it fit inside the full screen window.

I would not call the trend alarming..... maybe useless is a better word?

LOL Clickhappy u seem really in the whining mood lately eh? First "Why do people diss the side shot?" now this? Big f_cking deal. When was anyone dissing you or your "Golden Side Shot?" in the first place? You're now part of Air Team Images now as evidence of your new tag. Big deal, it seems like it's all gone to your head as of lately. Royal, you're definitely turning into an elitist on A.NET. That's right. You read it here first. Now lets get this straight, why bitch about photo sizes? Many people do it to just to preserve some detail that is lost if you go down to 1024. Or do we have to be members of ATI to leave photos at 1600x1200. Or wait, are you just complaining about it because you're stuck in 1028x768? Increase your monitor resolution.... I run in 1280x1024. My laptop LCD, 1600x1200, because its the optimum resolution. Why? I like to. Is it better than 1024x768? Not necessarily. Most of the photos on A.NET make great backgrounds so I like when the photo is huge, I can save it on the laptop without the details being lost. If it's too big for your screen, use fullsize option, or save the picture on your HD and reduce it in PS. Look, people take some great pics on A.NET, I love the large sizes. Hell if people uploaded RAW or full megapixels I wouldn't complain. I understand AirTeamImages (and all of you make great images, including you Royal) wants to sell high res images but why bitch about people who have no interest in selling or making profit over the love of aviation. Looks like you just shoot to impress now, or for the click, or $$$ not for yourself  Big grin Or is that what clickhappy means.... Why turn this into an elitist photography site?

Yeah 1024 feels like an outdated resolution. I run my comps in 1280, before that I ran 1152. I like to upload at 1100x wide, helps give some more res. to reduce jaggies in cheatlines and things. If it bothers you that much just open all the shots in medium size and be done with it.

Hi All,

As a screener, my 2c worth is related to photos that are 1600 wide.
I don't think there's any need to make something so huge. Worse still, images of that size are more likely to show flaws, and if averages have got anything to do with it, I'd bet they're more likely to get rejected for various reasons as well.

Certainly B. It's best to edit with shots at maximum resolution (i.e. JPEG, minimal compression or RAW and top Megapixels of camera)

Oh jeez, how about we go down to 640x480 size so we can cater to the PDA crowd now...  Yeah sure

Seriously how much detail is lost in PScs saving at 1280x960 under Quality 9 High Baseline Standard or even 10? Even in 1600x900 occationally you can get under the 1 megabyte file size upload with 9.

When I first started to upload photos to a.net a few months ago, I uploaded at 1024 x 682. Since then, I have upgraded my monitor to a 19 inch with a resoloution of 1280x1024.

I prefer the picture to fill up my screen so more detail can be seen, dont get me wrong - 1024 x 682 is still a good resoloution to upload at, but can be frustrating when it is a nice picture, yet - not all the detail can be seen.

I think the majority of everyday users still run at 1024, its kind of the standard spec for those who don't have/not interested in fancy monitors.

I upload at 1000 pix to suit those people but that's a personal preference.

For you guys uploading in the bigger sizes the pictures do have to be better than 1000 pix because its much easier to see any defects in the image when were screening, its known as "badbig" in the trade  Wink/being sarcastic

And to those who think that 1000 pix images cant be used for printing in mags think again. I have several that have been used because I was unavailable to offer a high res copy in time and you cant really tell the difference at a 2 column placement.

Airliners.net started out with no size requirements at all, then went up to 640x480, then increased to 800x600 and now it's 1024x768. The reasons we are requiring higher and higher resolution is because the average screen resolution of our users increase. In the good old days when monitors were 14", a photo of 640x480 pixels took up the whole screen. Now such a photo would look very small on an average monitor.

I advice to upload using the biggest size you can without getting the badbig rejections that Sukhoi talked about above. This will ensure that your photo will be of enjoyment to users in the future as well, when screen resolutions are higher than today.

Johan

What the Chui? Looking back at my post, it seems as if I were talking about some guy named Same, not Sam. Perhaps DLKAPA knows him from the proctologist's office?

I think what we've established in this thread is that we can and should upload at whatever resolution our little hearts desire. If something is bigger, or even at 1024 wide, I paste it into a quick viewing program (IrfanView), resize if necessary, and hit enter for a full-screen extravaganza. Good way to see if it'd make a good desktop, as well.

clickhappy,

if the site accepts the larger size, why question why people upload them?

I upload the odd one at a larger size, mainly because some photos (to me) look better larger, while others look better at 1024x

like what we decide to upload, the size is a choice we make and to me is a non-issue.

I've only uploaded a handful of photo's at 1280 or 1600 as an experiment, and yes they looked really nice on a 21" CRT I had in the office. But I found it cumbersome (I don't like scrolling) on my 1024-laptop at home. Right now, if I know a photographer always uploads at 1600, or if the big size is mentioned in the comment, I will probably only open it at 'medium' size.
About ever improving computer & screen technology: When the time comes when 1280 or even 1600 is the standard resolution around the world, I can just re-upload my pictures at a bigger format if the original permits it.  Big thumbs up
Cheers,
E

Many times I go up to 1100 or 1150 px wide to allow me to center a shot and still keep the height at 768 px. After all, isn't the minimum 768?

I dont think clickhappy was really whining about anything. All he's doing is presenting topics that are current and evoke discussion from a lot of people with different views.

I see it as a huge contribution to the boards. I don't think he seriously was trying to send a personal attack on anyone who uploads larger than 1024. I think it's obvious that he doesn't take this hobby that seriously as to get upset over something to silly.

Lorm is making a lot of assumptions about the tone of Clickhappy's posts, and is an obvious example of someone who takes this hobby too seriously. No one in here sounds angry except for you, Lorm.

it isn't the large sizes that are bad, its that the bad photographers choose to upload at the larger sizes, thats my point.

Learn to walk before you run Big grin

Get an acceptance rate of something like 90+% before you upload the larger stuff. Most of the "why was this picture rejected, help me" threads now show pictures that are WAY to large.

Larger doesnt neccesarily mean better, thats all.

And if you want to call me an elitist, because I like high quality shots, then so be it. I take pride in my work, even all the shots I take because I love this hobby.

Yes, I like uploading at 1600x1064. I don't feel ashamed for that.  Wink/being sarcastic

One of the things I like of photography is the way that freezes reality so you can sit, relax and check all the detail... And remember that if you don't like using the scroll bar, you can view just the mid size option.

If the original has enough resolution, it's easier for me to process. For less quality subjects (dark days, heat haze, etc) I lower to 1280 or 1024 wide.

More chances to make a slightly bigger unauthorized print? OK, fortunately this is just a hobby for me.

Ohh! I still remember those "sharp" 320x200 pixels, 8 bit color images that were almost "virtual reality" around 15 years ago...  Big grin

Enjoy A.net!

I am new here - but after reading the last 3 posts - looks like Crewmember Tonimr likes to upload big photos and BigPhil has maternal (motherly instinct) feelings for Mr. Clickhappy !! And that's a good thing - definitely cute !  Big grin

Like I said - I'm a newbie - just lookin' around. Everyone here seems to be pretty nice...

how about we go down to 640x480 size so we can cater to the PDA crowd

I know that remark was made with a smile, however, perhaps it requires a little serious consideration.

While as photographers most of us tend to look at pics on decent sized monitors, I'm sure photographers make up only a small proportion of site visitors. It would be interesting to know what the majority of visitors actually prefer. With the increasing prevelance of mobile, networked technologies, perhaps a small image size would be of interest and value ... or for those of us who use large screens, sometimes it might be nice to have 640x480 images display as, say panels of 4 images.

Perhaps a poll on preferred image size would be a useful one (for a change  Big grin). Or perhaps Johan could give us an idea of what the relationship is of medium-size to full-size views is.

I do take Johan's point on making it large for future viewers, but it seems to me that future technolgies are going to be more "small screen" based for the majority of visitors, or in the case of those still using large monitors, these will be more merciless in revealing the flaws in current-technology images.

Cheers,

Colin

Most of the "why was this picture rejected, help me" threads now show pictures that are WAY to large.

.... and most of the "help me" threads are from people to new to digital. Learning how to crop/resize properly is all part of the learning curve. As a for instance, when I first uploaded some shots here I did so at 1024 x 6.. thinking that the width minimum was sacrosanct (FAQ). They were rejected for badsize. So I went the other way and went for the 768 minimum but upwards of 11... wide. They got accepted. Now, following advise from you guys on the forum, I understand the PS a bit better and manage to get my shots to 1024 x 768.

how about we go down to 640x480 size so we can cater to the PDA crowd

My main interest is antique pottery for which I have my own website. This still has to be tested at 640 x480 to make sure it displays properly as there's still loads of people using that setting. (There's at least 3 people in my office using 640 x 480 despite having new Dell 17" monitors!). Not everyone has good enough vision to view higher resolutions for long periods, they are more comfortable using the lower setting.

The Photo Upload FAQ states: "Furthermore the photos need to be bigger than about 800x600 pixels. We suggest using sizes around 1000 pixels in width. Anything bigger than 1600x1600 will automatically be resized. For portrait format photos we recommend the longer side to be 800 pixels at least."

Johan, how about cutting some of us some slack on the size issue for a limited time period (like six months) especially since the queue is gigantic and now there is a queue limit for each photog? Some of us actually read the above FAQ language and went by what is still said there. I've processed a couple of hundred images at 1000 wide by 600 and more at 1024 by 700 and there simply isn't time to make all new JPG's from the larger TIF files.

CKW,

About that PDA comment,
In the future how about adding the ability to upload at least 2 different images sizes of the same picture? Along with the Large Medium Small Fullsize viewing option, viewers could choose 2 additional sizes to view the image without the distortion that shows up. It would use up more data storage on A.NETs servers and whoever pays the bills would have to decide Big grin. Users could upload an additional file at 800x600 and 640x480 or even smaller. However, the more realistic option, for users with smaller screens is to save it to your HD and reduce the image size in an image editor. I only say this because as everyone knows, when you view smaller, you get the distortion, from whatever compression A.NET uses to make the Medium, Small, Fullsize Screen images. As for a poll for something like this? I'm game.
