Whats In Your Bag?

Thu Aug 05, 2004 2:57 am

When you hit the airport for a "normal" day of spotting, what lenses do you bring?

For me I bring
  • Wide Angle, usually a Sigma 15-30
  • Mid Range, my fave. lens, a Nikon 24-85 G
  • Something with reach, my Sigma 70-200 APO
  • 1.4x and 2.0 teleconverters.

I usually dont bring my 80-400 VR unless I am going on a trip somewhere, as most of the spots I shot from dont require such length.

    What's in your bag?

    My usual equipment:

  • My camera... Canon 300D

  • Canon 18-55mm

  • Tamron 70-300mm

  • Binoculars

  • 1 GB Microdrive

  • 2 spare batteries

  • Usually, I do not take out more. Tripod for night shots only.

    cheers,

If I listed all the stuff in my bag, you would immediately wonder why I don't have a BUNCH of photos uploaded onto a.net. Since I don't have a good answer, I'll save myself the embarrassment.  Smile

I have the following lens in my bag, plus all the other misc. items (CF case, blower, etc)

  • Canon 50mm 1.8

  • Canon 18-55mm, used only on the wide end

  • Canon 100-400L IS

  • I will soon add something to cover the under 100 range, currently considering (and taking advice on):

  • Canon 24-85

  • Canon 28-105

  • Tamron 28-75

  • I have seen Royal's bag, he also likes to keep a few beany babies in there for good luck.  Smile

I can be very short about my lens of choice:
Almost all my shots are taken with the 100-400... I have a cheap 28-80 aswell, but it's in desperate need of replacement. I hope to get a good deal on a 17-40L in 2 months time, and the 40-100 gap will just have to wait to get filled.
    Cheers,
    Ed

I had a 70-200, but sold it a few days ago. Too much overlap to justify keeping it.

All I need is my trusty 400mm f2.8 plus the 2 x convertor.
I would say about 80-90% of the my photos are taken with that lens.

Occasinally I use the 80-200 f2.8, but very rarely.

If I know that I will be shooting on the ramp or inside a plane I"ll bring the 17-35mm and the 10.5mm f2.8.

Good time to check the bag(s) before my next road trip. This includes only the portable stuff; I won't even get into the large-format kit here:

    Cameras & lenses:
    Canon EOS 10D
    Sigma 28-90 and 70-300 lenses
(don't start on me--I can't decide what I want to replace them with)
2 1/4" Rolleiflex TLR with built-in Carl Zeiss lenses

    Film, etc:
2-4 rolls 120 Fujichrome Tungsten-balanced color slide film (for the Rollei); I may have a roll or two of Velvia in there also.
    2-3 rolls 120 Kodak T-Max 400
    (2) 256MB CF cards
    Flashtrax 40GB storage drive
Hand light meter and an old spot meter that seems to be reading everything about two stops under (argh)
Battery chargers for the camera and the Flashtrax
Bogen 3100 legs with a 3047 head (works for everything)
    Two shutter-release cables
    Lens cleaning cloth and brush
Notebook to record exposures for the film camera
A couple of model release forms

    Miscellany:
    Small bottle of hand sanitizer
Two plastic bags (you just never know)
Business cards (to hand out to cops)
    Sunblock
    6-7 rubber bands
    About three bucks in change
    Cell phone

Whew... I gotta learn to cut back.

I usually don't need much for an airport visit...

    * Nikon N80 body
    * Nikkor 28-105D lens (I'm surprised to not see this lens on other people's lists, it's a very sharp lens with a useful range for general-purpose shooting)
    * Nikkor 70-300ED lens for the long range crap
    * Couple of rolls of K64
    * Canon S50 digicam

Camera, lenses, bins, scanner, log book and reference books, tripod and/or monopod, cleaning accessories, spare batts, charts, compass, passport, money and a toilet roll! (The latter, believe me, is up there with the camera and lenses...Man, have I been caught out before!) Sometimes have the spotting/drinking beer chair too! Oh, and a set of steps in the boot too!
