Photography Question For DC Area Photographers

Tue Aug 10, 2004 8:12 am

Dear DC Area Photographers,
My friend and I plan to go to IAD this Thursday to shoot some of the international arrivals. We were wondering where the best place to shoot is (regardless of runway operations on that particular day). Any input to this matter would be most appreciated since Thursday is quickly approaching. One more question. I went to Gravelly Point today, and was kind of upset because the airplanes were departing to the north. Is there anyway to find out before you go which direction they have them coming in.
Thank guys!

Newyork355,

If you have an aircraft scanner, you can listen to the ATIS recording, within one hour of your planned arrival time - and it will advise which runway is being used. Frequencies appear below. If they say arrivals are on runway #1, they are departing to the north. If they say runway #19, they'll come right over Gravelly Point.

A map of DCA is at this link:
ATIS frequency: 132.65

A map of IAD is at this link:
ATIS frequency: 134.85

If you want a to see some diagrams of the best spotting locations, you can check the following link. It was prepared by a local spotter and an a.net crew member, "Lindy". It is accurate and very well done.
