Opinons On This Pic Please

Fri Aug 27, 2004 1:27 am

This was rejected for not being level, looks level to me. Opinions?

Wow, really?  Confused
After re-examination of the light poles and vertical beams on the terminal building they still look perfectly vertical to me.
But I will try the CCW rotate and resubmit, thanks Clickhappy.  Smile

I always try to get an overall look of an image and usually spot an unlevel one within a second. This one needs some ccw as it is leaning to the right. try not to focus so much on a single pole or building but get an overall look and ask yourself "does it look right?"

Every building line looks straight as hell to me with a grid on it. It may be a millionth of a pubic hair off but cause for rejection?

Don,

There is an obvious tilt in this image, look at the lines towards the horizon, everything leans towards the right here. For me, this would indeed be a rejection.

I zoomed in 600% with the grid on and the vertical lines on the terminal on the left are parallel to the grid lines, along with the storage tanks way in the back at the top. Sorry but I just don't see it being to the point of being unacceptable.

Got my fingers crossed since it's such a nice YVR action shot. Big grin

Is the pole in the top right corner really that crooked?

Now could i ask an opinion from fellow photog's-

Is this level?, check the pole out in the distance under the aircraft? maybe its got something to do with the lens he used or am i seeing things.

Ryan Hemmings

p.s- in no way am i digging at anything here, in pic terms or photographer - Joe hope you dont mind me using this as an example of my curiosity, keep up good work i love your pics.

"After re-examination of the light poles and vertical beams on the terminal building they still look perfectly vertical to me."

Sure, that left light pole is parallel to the left edge of the pic. But the camera is pointed slightly down, so vertical light poles won't be parallel to each other on the image. If there were a light pole at the right edge of the pic it would be visibly not parallel to the edge of the frame.

Does it matter? Maybe not. But that one light pole isn't conclusive.

that wide angle shot is going to be hard to tell if it is perfectley level, there arent many useful visual aids in the plane of the lens that doesn't distort.

If you ask me it enhances the style of the image.

It's important to turn the grid on in your image editing application. This will provide a pretty obvious indication of whether or not a shot is level.

Neither of the two shots in question here are level. I would have rejected them too. (Including the one that was accepted).

Second one was probably accepted based on its creativity... it's just a bit more dramatic than the first one (the one that wasn't accepted). Still, I think the 747 shot would have been improved with a small rotation.

Not every shot needs to be level - I've taken plenty of shots in my life of various objects that were not at all level. But most overview type shots, and probably most shots in general with a visible horizon, are better when level.

Don,

Agreed, upon checking every single vertical in the image, especially the pole to the left, it looks pretty level, but if you look at it as a whole, I do see a real tilt in here. But each to his own ofcourse  Smile

Take care

The ramp is definitely unlevel in Crooked Eye Joey's photo. Those of us who know him well say that the weight of his ego bends the surface of the earth temporarily in his vicinity. Those of us who have shot with him get unlevel results too but only when he's around.  Smile

In the first shot I opened the photo in Photoshop CS, zoomed in to 600% and put the grid on. I still don't see the unlevelness because the terminal's vertical lines are parallel to the grid lines. Now, do we have an unlevel terminal due to shoddy airport contractors or what? You would think that the terminal and the storage tanks in the background would have perfect vertical angles but I guess not.

You say "not ever shot needs to be level" which is true in some cases but supposedly on airliners.net they need to be level.

Okay, I opened the 2nd shot that was rotated CCW in CS, zoomed in to 600% and the storage tanks' vertical lines are parallel to the grid lines along with some of the terminal's vertical lines.

However, some of the terminal's vertical lines looked like they're off in the CCW direction in comparison to the grid lines. I think we have a warped terminal building. Have there been any earthquakes there?

That means the first photo was off one hundredth of a pubic hair instead of one millionth which is pretty significant.

ok..this is an important point because pulling parallels from the side and checking verticals can be frustrating when the land is sloped (because you get the poles straight but a crooked appearance

Shouldnt the verticals just be at the center of the picture?....as you move away from the center of the lens isnt there distortion?..

I am a bit perpexled 'cos what happens with ground level shot of a plane on a sloping runway...some planes are nose down ?...arrhhh....

I think you're correct on verticals being straight in the middle or middle third of the image due to possible lense distortion, especially with wide angles.

Since there are few if any vertical lines in the middle of Joe's shot I would fall back to horizontal lines, like the ramp which is plainly visible, which will work just as well with the grid lines. The ramp is substantially lower on the left than on the right, and while runways might slope up or down, I've never seen a parking ramp slope up and down. My summary: the first image at Vancouver was off by a hundredth of a pubic hair as it turns out and was rejected. Joe's image is off by at least 22.5 pubic hairs and it made it.

Your choice but good luck straightening them out to get 22.5 of them on the grid to confirm that I'm right. I spent hours trying to tape them on my monitor to be accurate in my count because I knew I'd be flamed if I was off by one or two.  Smile
