MCO Spotting Blows!

Thu Sep 09, 2004 4:19 am

Hey everyone. Just needed to vent and tell someone how much I hate MCO. Even though I frequently visit it, today I got kicked out for the first time in quite a while. Delta Cargo has always been a bunch of a**holes but I thought they might've lightened up since they reopened 17R/35L but they didn't. Got told today by the assistant manager of Delta Air Logistics that "Taking pictures in this parking lot if prohibited". So I said, "May I ask why and since when?" He said, "Because this parking lot is for this business and since 9/11." I said, "This is such B.S. Am I breaking a law here, sir (said which much sarcasm)?" He said, "no but they don't want people out here taking pictures so you may be seeing security soon coming by here... just warning you." I said, "whatever! goodbye!" and I rolled up my window and pulled away. So if your reading this GOAA, your little B***hes at Delta Cargo are following your stupid rules but all of you can kiss my a**. I know that sounds extreme but if you live here and spot at MCO, you can probably relate to my feelings in a lesser degree.  Big thumbs up Anyone else have any MCO security stories? Thanks!

-Justin

Could have possibly been a little nicer about it.

Also, we were told by DPD up here not to take pictures from inside our cars. They told us that as long as we were outside our cars and in plain view, we would be fine.

I could've been a lot meaner about it but I thought I was rather friendly the way I handled it. It just pisses me off that 3 years ago today was the last time I freely walked the airside terminals as a non-ticketed passenger and back then, I would never have been told to go away but now, the excuse "since 9/11" is used all the time and I'm sick of it. Just look at my signature on here.

Also, we were told by DPD up here not to take pictures from inside our cars. They told us that as long as we were outside our cars and in plain view, we would be fine.

It was because I was in plain view that I was caught. If I had been in my car, I'd still be there probably!

Well, here in Denver, I guess they are just suspicious of people who aren't willing to show their faces.

I think attitudes like yours has a lot to do with some of the problems we've been having. You are spoiling it for the rest of us.

Perhaps if you'd grow up a little and conduct yourself in a more mature manner the Delta people wouldn't chase people off. They now have the impression that people who take photos of aircraft are rude, arrogant teenagers.

Ever come to my airport with that attitude and I'll put you in your place really fast.

Brick, your saying that I am the CAUSE of DL's anti-spotter rules? Yeah right! This is the first time I've ever been kicked outta DL cargo. Ask anyone like Dazed767, who's been kicked out of DL cargo countless times from what he tells me, they're like that to everyone. I was very polite and respectful but also straight-forward with the guy. It's not like I boycotted and sat there and made the police move me! I left just as he wanted me to. If you lived in Orlando and spotted at MCO, you'd understand but you don't... you live in Denver so don't even talk to me about my attitude and call me a rude and arrogant teenager until you experience MCO spotting! They're all jerks here and don't care who you are or the way you act. I'm tired of getting pushed around by rent-a-cops and underpaid security jerks for doing my hobby. Aren't we all fighting the same fight here?

Justin,

I would suggest never to say "since when". After all you know what they are gonna say, It's in your Sig. And it's the only excuse people can use, so why should you give them a chance to use it. And are you actually on Delta Cargo's property or who own's it. Maybe it's Public property. And if it is public, then I would pretty much ignore the guy after all people like that don't have authority. Police do though, so just obey them and be friendly.

I was down at the "holes" at MIA this past summer and I was standing right at the gate. There is access road that goes between the gate and runways. So trucks drive by all the time. And a "Airport Saftey" truck pulled up in front of the gate with me on the other side. And he signaled to me like there is no photography allowed. I pointed to the sign on my side of the gate that clearly says "Photography allowed only here". He just sat in his truck and like kept saying no or something, he finally got out after he probably realized he couldn't hear me and I couldn't hear him. He asked for ID, I said no. He quickly said "It's just a routine check". I said no, I'm a tax paying American Citizen and I'm also a minor. And this guy or kid looked like he was fresh to the job and he doesn't even know the designated area's for Photography. You wanna go do routine checks, go do them in the terminals at MIA and on the ramp for workers. Since most of them are illegal aliens and just steal stuff anyway. He finally left cause he knows he has no authority. Then a cop of course was called over. All he did was just pulled up and sat there, I just politly waved and he waved back then just drove off a few minutes later. The best thing to do is just give a slick wave to the passing cop. Cause you are showing you have nothing to hide and obviously a threatening individual would not want to draw attention. I love how Authorities can not point out the difference between a Threatining Individual and a 16 yr old Aviation Photographer like Justin and Myself.

I haven't been to that spot in 2 good years. After I was told "OPD is on their way", I havent' been back. I guess you could say this place is like BUF and ORD, they just will not let down, I don't even bother anymore (except from my backyard  Big grin ). Thank god for TPA I guess. Don't worry, MIA will start getting good in 6-7 weeks or so.

I thought I might add my two cents here. Granted I've never been to MCO nor know anything about its spotting locations, but it sounds to me like this parking lot is owned by Delta. If so, it is private property and they have every right to prohibit you from staying there. Giving security a bad attitude doesn't help anything either. It only makes things worse for the rest of us.

Next time, stay on public property and keep it cool. You're fighting a battle you will not possibly win.
I think Big Foot is blurry, Its not the photographers fault. Theres a large out of focus monster roaming the countryside

Maybe I didn't make myself clear the first time so let me straighten a few things out:

-The guy who came up to me wasn't security and was the assistant manager of the business

-I didn't give him that horrible of an attitude. You all are acting like I told him off and gave him the bird on the way out. No... I just asked why I was being told to leave and then I left. I just got a little peeved when I heard that "since 9/11" excuse. That is my biggest pet peeve in the world.

-It is private property, hence the reason why I left without further delay. For Wagz, there really isn't any public property you can go to, to shoot airliners without getting really high-wing shots. Shots that I took like:

.... they're ok but that gets old especially when I'm longing for a shot like:

Don't click on the pics that way people won't accuse me of self-plugging my shots. Just look at the preview. You can tell the difference. All are nice for looking at planes but the latter are more interesting and both taken on private property versus the top 3 which were taken on a public road 2 miles north of MCO. I've learned to settle for more shots like those top 3 but once in a while I want a little variety and a little less high-wing and go for a little more interesting shots. Hope this clears up some confusion.

Well...uhhh....Delta owns the parking lot, its for their employees. I'm pretty sure they have the say so over who is in the lot and who is not.

If they ask you to leave their property, I'd suggest you leave.

I used to visit MCO twice a year until June 2002 when they hired a putz named Ken Harwood with the grand title of "Airport Security Threat Prevention Manager". He is the guy who instituted the new rules requiring photographers to request a pass, and, to use the garage locations only (its worthless due to the distances involved). He also eventually convinced the City Council of Orlando to fence in and block off the sandy parking area on Frontage Rd.. across the toll road from runway 18 thresholds a bit later in the year.
Up until he began his illustrious new career of harassing aviation enthusiasts, and, also intimidating airport personnel, MCO (particularly David Wegman, Public Relations Ofc.) used to be pretty decent to us. Unfortunately, David has no choice but to follow the newly instituted guidelines when issuing photo passes.
On 6/26/02, after trying to run me off & falsely informing me that aviation photography & logging registration numbers was against federal law, then me telling him to blow off, Harwood made a dumb attempt to grab my logbook out of my hand without asking 1st and ended up with a very sore arm because of it. When he called the police and tried to press charges against me, the Orlando police officer who responded refused, informed him that he was in fact the assaultee and asked if I would like to press charges, I declined, but in hindsight, I wish I had.
I now make every attempt to boycott flying into MCO because of their actions against aviation enthusiasts.

I kinda forgot what I said...

I think it was along the lines that it was a parking location for DL's employees but it is open to the public and has no gates nor requires any permit to park there, therefore, it's open to the public. Now, when they make it required to have a permit to park there or they have a gate to enter through, then I can't be there.

wal-mart's parking lot is open to the public with no gates or permits required, they can still kick your ass off it if they want. Just because it is open doesn't mean it is public property.

-Ever come to my airport with that attitude and I'll put you in your place really fast

Mark, I met you at MIA last year, you seemed like a nice guy, but I feel that comment is too arrogant to say to a fellow photographer. Sorry, but that wasn't too "cool" at all. I understand your view point, but realize that younger photographers are not yet bored with the regular traffic and it's frustrating for them to be told not to photograph.

I myself only go to the airport only if I have to when something specific that I want comes in. That way I save myself the trouble of answering some dumb hero wannabe individual looking to raise his/her self esteem at my expense.

-You wanna go do routine checks, go do them in the terminals at MIA and on the ramp for workers. Since most of them are illegal aliens and just steal stuff anyway

Being frustrated doesn't mean you should post stupidities.

-Mcdonobr:

Very interesting post and glad to hear you put Ken Hardhead in his place. I'm sure he'll remember that. You commited a major mistake by not pressing charges though.. Something like that would be worthy of taking to the local news so people find out what kind of a*hole this is.

-Nice shots Dlx, my guess you took those shots near Boggy Creek. I myself tried to find a suitable spot but the only one with a decent side view is a little far away from the landing path. There are woods around there if you want to be closer, so it's very difficult to get them right after the appear over the trees.

-I really don't give a crap anyway anymore because I recently got good news about that location. That's all I'm saying

ok don't be sorry, I don't have any privileges but I get the few shots I ever need at MCO anyways, I stop on the road, run across the street or whatever it takes. But the honest truth is that MCO is a waste of time, there's rarely anything new or any rare charters anymore, no big loss, but thanks anyways  Smile

Miamix707, what the hell did I say to change your mind and make you turn to Brick's arrogant thinking process? All I said was that I had been given certain privileges and I didn't wanna lose them. I hardly find that grounds to call me immature. You don't even know me!

Justin, we should just drop it. Since these "mature adults" can handle themselves in front of the authorities, unlike us. I know a great spot at MIA that I found and I haven't told anybody, am I now immature!

I get so sick of people in this forum judging others by a few mis-read words or by a non-descriptive profile.

PHL, nothing wrong with being younger, but that stament about the MIA employees stealing stuff and being illegal aliens makes you sound like a 10 year old hick boy from Bithlo, ask your friend where that is.

With all the background checks applicants have to go through to get a job to work at MIA, well you probably woudln't even qualify.

well a notebook is less suspicious than cameras are, remember that this is a paranoid, not very cultured, sue happy society and cameras take "pictures that can be used to prove something". That's apart from the terrorist paranoia. However I can guarantee you if they can tell you are writing down regs, they'll come over and say something to you.

Now, the US is not like Europe, at least not anymore, where people hang around airports when it's nice outside. The most common hobby here is pounding on beer while watching football on TV. Ever wonder why this is the fattest country in the world?

Screw you DC8Jet!! I'm not mad because they asked me to leave. I'm mad because of the way all of MCO is about spotting. This was just the culmination of much pent up anger towards MCO's harsh spotting rules. It was somethin to kick me out but to then call and report me to the cops like I later found out they did! They were the jerks... not me! Come to MCO and spot for more than a few visits and then tell me how much of the jerk I am! This is the end of this discussion! The event is passed and I've over it. Let's stop replying, shall we?
