Canon Lenses... Choosing A New Car Is Much Easier!

Thu Sep 16, 2004 2:00 pm

Honestly, choosing a car is much easier. When making a decision on these prime lenses, what do you take into consideration (other than price), really, when you are going to spend $4000 dollars on a lens, what is another $1000?? What I mean is, you have lenses like the Canon 300mm F/2.8L IS which is hands down the sharpest and fastest lens in the world. Coupled with the 2.0x extender, you have yourself a whopping 600mm @ F/5.6.

But... What about these other lenses? The 400mm F/2.8L IS, or the 500mm F/4L IS or even the 600mm F/4L IS?

You are right for sure! I'm glad I never really looked into something really expensive, just went with the 100-400! (Simple choice)

When I see Colin's latest uploads from LHR, my jaw just hit the ground! He's just showing off!!  Big thumbs up

Seriously, great work. But I wouldn't like to have the bill for those lenses.  Smile

I think its more difficult whne you start building a collection, as you have to consider which lens will give you the most use ... so for example, most people will get more mileage out of a 100-400 than a 400 prime. So you're juggling optimum quality against flexibility - compromises are inevitable.

But once you've got the basics covered, I think things get easier. In my own case, my photos (and the photos I want to get) show I need more reach. I also know that I hate using tripods. Looking at the options, I want a quality telephoto with image stablisation - I also need a lens I can handhold (weight factor) with the longest possible reach. In my case, the 500mm f4 LIS is the only lens which fits the bill.

So far I have only "rented" (actually had it kindly loaned, but the intention was to rent), and indeed, financially this makes a lot of sense - I could hire this lens for something like 100 occasions for the price of buying it, and, if I assume there are maybe 20 occasions a year where having a 500 is truly worthwhile, renting makes sense. The catch is availability - my local probably won't be able to let me have it again until after Xmas as its been booked by other photographers.

Cheers,

Colin

Absolutely  Smile I had the lens for the weekend for the Duxford show on Saturday ... but there was no way I wasn't gonna find something to point it at on Sunday! It was a real pity they weren't using 27 for departures - I was hoping for some killer "in-flight" shots. Maybe next time.

Cheers,

Colin

Some may disagree with you on that one... But if it suits your requirements, thats good!

Anyhow, these lenses that are being talked about are not quite in the same league as the 35-350. They cost 2-4 times as much  Smile

Welcome btw.

So what are your requirements for a car?
Everyone has different requirements....some like it fast, others just want to cruise......
4 doors, 2 doors, convertible, SUV, 4WD, 2WD, rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, leather or cloth, automatic or shift, sedan or wagon.

So choosing a car is not really that easy at all.

Choosing a lens is easy! You just have to analyze your shooting habits
and .......buy the lens which suits your requirements.
