what happened to the beach? Where has all the sand gone?
is paradise now spoiled?
I hope anybody knows something about that...
Maho beach doesn't look like a nice place anymore.

I recognized that a few times, too... If you compare old images with newer ones... A sad sight!

Tidal forces and several Hurricanes have swiped the sand out of there. It happens regularly, and the sand will be back.  Smile

What is with the rocks then? Do they get moved or do they get covered up?

It looks like the rocks may have been put there to help buffer the road and runway in situations like the above, if you notice in some pictures if SXM with the large area of sand, there are some rocks poking through near the road.
And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

Guys,

It's a common cycle, don't worry. Every year there are a few months where the sand is washed away, but it is replenished after. The rocks are there as a means of anti-errosion, to keep the road from crumbling into the water. It seems to be a bit more durastic than usual, however as Wietse said it's just the hurricanes. Number four is on it's way!!

There is a fine line between a picture and a photo. The latter seems to be disappearing.

Hey Everyone!!

As a St. Maarten resident I am happy to tell you that the beach is back. We had several hurricanes pass close to us and the beach sand gets pulled out. WE havn't been hit this year (cross your fingers for us) and the island looks better than it has in years.

Hope to see some of you one day!!

Thanks Steve for the explanation. I am keeping my fingers crossed that your beautiful homeland will not get hit by one of these monster storms.

PS I think SXM should build a small hotel only for airliners.netters.....They should build it next to the Sunset Beach Bar on Maho Beach  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Why only for a.net people? What do you have against photographers who go there and are not part of a.net?

Nothing wrong with doing something for a.netters. Usually doesn't take long before someone else does the same thing..

Hello Steve Elliott,

Possibly we can get together at the Sunset at the end of October. Wife and I always spend Halloween at SXM

Guys

I got back from a 2 week vacation at SXM 5 days ago.

When we arrived Jeanne was passing North West and the swell had build up so much it destroyed the beach at Maho. 4 days before we were due to go come another swell from karl pushed the beach back up. Simply amazing.

The beach went from this

in less than 48hrs.

Simply amazing what mother nature can do.

So for anyone thinking about heading out there to SXM, Go for it.

Hey, Colin--great angle on that KLM shot. I was at SXM in August and got all the usual pics while I was there, which is probably why I haven't uploaded any. Yours really gives a sense of perspective!

Cheers,

"Airbus is testing the A380's departure thrust"

Damn, you stole my line...  Wink/being sarcastic

I love the people seemingly "ducking" as the plane passes over them. It's not like they would get cought in the undercarriage if they remained in an upright position...  Smile
