LGA Getting More Exciting

Mon Sep 27, 2004 9:14 pm

LGA has been known for a couple years to be fairly boring. Since the downturn in the industry, traffic became 50% regional jet, and DL was the only airline sending in heavies. Even DL's 764 service from ATL is only down to one a day now.

Things have changed lately, though. In the Spring, Canjet appeared which brought 732s back in here.

JetBlue started ops on 9/17, bringing in all those nice tails and a nice new look for LGA.

9/20 saw the start of both JetsGo and WestJet, which brings in 737s with winglets and more 732s (westjet) and the option for Fokker 100s (jetsgo) to appear at LGA again as well.

US Airways has now painted three of its A319s in Star Alliance colors, one (N702UW) showing up this morning. Nice options for new paint schemes.

All good timing as the nice weather is starting to roll in.

Other nice schemes include Air Canada's Tango and Horizons still flyin around and their Jazz on their BAe-146s. The American 738 retrojet, and the hunt for more United new colors. When the snow starts up, Air Canada will bring in 767s a little to make up for the previous day's cancelled flights, and AA and UA might do the same.

I'm expecting a fun season from LGA, with this also being the first fall/winter that Brian Futterm and myself have DSLRs.

I hope Anet is ready.

If only we could get the 727's back. or 747's  Smile, LGA would rock even more!
As it is right now, I definately thing LGA is in the top 10 spotting airports in the world, just because of the great angles you can get and awesome backrounds.

As long as Futterman wears appropriate footwear this winter, we should have a great spotting season at LGA! Well said, Phil...  Big thumbs up

Alberchico - Yes, I'd be interested in checking out the observation tower. Its always been closed when I went there in the past. Contact me through my profile. Thx.

Phil - If it gets any more exciting at LGA, I will have to take a nap.  Smile jk...
can't wait to get back over there.

Tom - If Futterman continues to stick his camera through the fence at the El Al cargo parking lot, we may have no choice but to spot at LGA more often! Big grin

Alberchico - I've been up in the tower, as have several other NYC spotters. It's not a bad place at all, although I personally don't like the tint on the glass. When the sun is just right, you can get some nice pictures.

Take a look at some of my recent pictures, which were taken from the tower:

Not the best quality, but interesting angles for sure.

I'm a New Yorker, do most of my shooting over at JFK, have to get over to LGA, its sounds like that observation tower is a good place to start.

Southpaw8669 - IMO, The observation tower is definitely NOT a good place to start. First, it is hard to get into it on the weekends because the school is usually closed. Second, it is hard to get into it all the time if you are not a student. Third, the glass is tinted and slanted, so the shooting conditions are not optimal. Fourth, there are much better spots outside, such as Planeview Park. If I were you, I'd start with Planeview Park, or the Marina, if you want to get a feel for LGA spotting. I think you'll be pleased with the results from those places.

Just remember that Planeview is only good for 04 arrivals or the very, very rare 22 departures. Sometimes you can get decent shots of 04 departures (i.e., taxiing onto 04), but that is tricky. You should have a backup plan if Planeview is not the place to be. If 13 is being used for departure, or 31 for arrivals, there are a few areas to go, including the Marina, Flushing Meadows park, the pedestrian bridge over the GCP that leads into the airport, etc. There are also some interesting spots around College Point Blvd. The nice thing about LGA is that you have room to be creative.

Next time some of us are heading out to LGA we'll put a thread on here and let you know where we'll be.

I'd also like to add that the risk is MUCH greater in the COA tower. If you're not a student, you're not supposed to be there. It's not like Planeview Park, where it's legal to be there, and cops may come up to you and check your ID, and it's no big deal. Inthe COA tower, you're blatantly tresspassing and the chances of you being taken away in handcuffs is good.

If you can get a student from the college to invite you in then you will have no problem whatsoever with security. In fact if you tell them that you are interested in taking serious professional photography then they will help you out.

I've never found myself in the COA tower. I considered it once but the fact that you have to walk into the building itself made me turn my back. It seems that to get good photo opportunities these days you either have to be lucky, criminalistic, or know someone. That's why we all love Princess Juliana Intl...

Glad to hear that LGA is becoming more 'original'. Met games just aren't the same when you have RJ after RJ, then the occasional Dash. I like LGA much more than JFK so it's good to have some new stuff to see.

All good timing as the nice weather is starting to roll in....with this also being the first fall/winter that Brian Futterm and myself have DSLRs

Tomorrow and Saturday look like they're going to be a bit rough but otherwise, I'm not complaining. Last time I saw Futterman (just before we were detained, haha) he let me use his Olympus. I'll have to devise a plan to get the 20D around my neck and at the opportune moment run for Hollis Hills. Big grin

There is a fine line between a picture and a photo. The latter seems to be disappearing.

Speaking of Futterman, he's got some terrific shots in the queue right now that are from our day at JFK on 9/26. He put that 20D to work, that's for sure! He even managed to get a picture of the bee that wouldn't leave me alone and ultimately stole a huge piece of cream cheese off my bagel, and my subsequent attempt to throw a bag in the garbage only to be stymied by a freak gust of wind.  Big grin

All this talk of LGA is making me wanna get out there!

Bottom line re: the COA tower...why sit up there behind tinted glass when you can go outside and see/hear the planes much better? Shooting through glass is not the way to go. Sure, the angle is unique, but it gets old quick, and the picture quality from up there is nothing to write home about.

"If you can get a student from the college to invite you in then you will have no problem whatsoever with security. In fact if you tell them that you are interested in taking serious professional photography then they will help you out."

Taking someone up in the tower with a camera taking pics of palnes is a little beyond "just seeing if my friend wants to attend here." It's clear that it's then being used as a hang out or worse.

Just making sure that people understnad the potential risk involved should they take you up on your offer.

If you've got to lie in order to make it work, you shouldn't be doing it to begin with, especially when telling the truth we already get suspected of terrorism, bullshitting is the last thing we need.
