Usage Of Photo For CD Cover (School Project)

Sat Oct 02, 2004 2:21 am

Hello,

Im doing a project for my graphics class and it is to make a CD cover/case. I decided on an aviation theme and I want to use one of Baily's contrail photos. It is not going to be mass used and it just for marking. Its just a picture of a JAL 744 contrail. I want to make the CD about Songs for Flying and about flying. I am not going to be giving it out. It is just a design in Corel Draw and then printed, put into a CD case. Handed in, marked and then returned to me. I want to know if I can use the photo for my work? It is just for evaluation and then I will make keep it as a display in my room. Is this against a copyright issue? Bailey? What do you have to say about it? I will need to remove the a.net banner at the bottom as it is not visual appealing.

Please give me the advice. If I cannot use it, I'll get another photo of something else. Maybe just an AC plane from the Air Canada website.

Thanks!
Josh

I also need about 10 songs with aviation/plane related lyrics or themes. So far I have "Leaving on a Jet Plane" Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly" and Britney Spears "Toxic". Can you give me a few more that I can use?

Josh,

You can contact Bailey, I am sure that when he is around he will give you permission for using his shot on your cover. He is a nice guy. He is the only one that can give you permission for that, none of us can choose to do so.

First of all, drop the Britney Spears song.  Big grin Use:
Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly" (and depending on how flexible/desperate you are, "Free Falling" can work too)
Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner"
Led Zeppelin's "Going to California" (it's in there!)

 Big thumbs up

It's from a long time back (1960s) but how about the Box Tops' "The Letter" (Gimme a ticket for an airplane....)

Led Zeppelin's "Going to California" (it's in there!)

"Gonna take my chances on a big jet plane
never let them tell ya that its a-all the same"
And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

Good suggestions but I dont want something that just says "I flew on a plane" and the rest is nothing to do with aviation.

What about the one that says "Planes are going up, planes are coming down"? Maybe they arent saying plane but I cannot find the lyrics. What is the name of that song?

Frank Sinatra - "Come Fly with Me" - a song that captures a little of the romance of jetting off to exotic locations.

Cheers,

Don't forget the classic Joni Mitchell "This Flight Tonight"
All about a plane trip. Notably she's technically wrong with her lyrics about flaps....listen and see what I mean. You gotta have your CANADIAN CONTENT!!!

There is a fine line between a picture and a photo. The latter seems to be disappearing.

Also, another classic standard, "Fly Me to the Moon." Frank Sinatra's take is probably the most famous, but its been recorded by lots of groups, including my own.

-Leanne

P.S. "Come Fly With Me" was actually written by Sammy Cahn & Jimmy Van Heusen. Sinatra first recorded that one around 1957, I think.

Britney Spears "Toxic"

Frank Sinatra - "Come Fly with Me" - a song that captures a little of the romance of jetting off to exotic locations.

Two of the great songs I associate with flying for some reason! Both stored on my PC and regularly come out when I need to just relive the moment of flight!

These following songs are the ones that somehow remind me of flying!  Smile

My suggestions:

Blink 182 - Miss you

Maroon 5 - Sweetest Goodbye (Some REAL good songs on the "Songs About Jane" album)

Madonna - Lucky Star (Laugh all you want Big grin)

Iggy Pop - The Passenger

Incubus - Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity)

Many many more that I could mention, but these are my favourites!

Cheers all,

Justin  Big thumbs up

Destination Sunshine by Balearic (Track 9 on Gatecrasher Discotech disc 2, IIRC) has an Iberia boarding call, both in Spanish and English.

Pink Floyd - Learning to fly
Foo Fighters - learn to fly
Jimmy Eat World - Goobye Sky Harbor
Tori Amos - I can´t see New York
...
and if everything else won´t do it, just go for the Top Gun theme...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Songs that have something to do with planes / flying:
Typically Tropical: Barbados
Reinhard Mey: Ueber den Wolken
Roxette: Seven-Twenty-Seven
Don McLean: American Pie (about a crash)
Lenny Kravit: Fly Away
Shawn Colvin: Another Plane went down today
The Beatles: Back in the USSR (just for the jet engine noise)
Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes: Up Where We Belong

Music that, to me, sounds a bit like flying:
most of the stuff by Enya
Karl Jenkins: Adiemus (used for Delta Airlines adverts in Germany 6-7 years ago)
some others I don't remember right now...

About the project: This is just my opinion, but I believe it's perfectly acceptable, as pupil or student, to use photos for homework purposes without getting permission (as long as you give image credit). When I had to give a presentation about my final year project last year, I borrowed images liberally and used them for a powerpoint presentation. Asking each and every one of the photographers for permission would simply have taken too long...

Regards

How 'bout "Airport" by the Motors (I think) - great forgotten song! and "Luton Airport" (can't remember who did that)

Or going back in time a bit "Flying Down to Rio" as sung by Fred Astaire ... "hey fellas, turn them ol' propellors"  Smile

Cheers,
