Sam Chui - 1st Member Of 2000/2000 Club

Sun Oct 10, 2004 6:57 am

Just checked the all time stats on the search page and found out that Sam Chui is right now the first and only member of the 2000 (average views) / 2000 (number of pics) club, congratulations!  Big thumbs up

There is a guy called Joe not far behind him..........

I have a prediction: Sam Chui will be the first A.netter to post a picture taken from a commerical flight.... to space.

You heard it here first!

Not to be argumentative Quantas 077, but your list simply isn't correct.
When you say......
"top ten of all time averages for shots in database."

somehow all the numbers aren't there.
I personally have the following....
"On average, a photo of yours has been viewed 6317 times". So go figure, it's just a number on a list that for some reasons doesn't actually show the highest averages of all the members who post to A.net.

I really don't care anyway. It's just a number on a list, but thought you'd like to know that there are indeed errors in the system.

There's a photographer on A.Net named Samuel Lo who has only 46 photos in the database but has over 1.8 million hits on those 46 photos.

Good spot about not caring about views.
When the site has such a biased system favoring shots uploaded just after midnight anything based on views must be taken with a dose and a half of salt.
Getting a good hitting shot is a matter of luck based on the quality of the photo and its upload time.
A good quality shot will always get its fair share of views but the key is its upload time.
A great photo uploaded between 2100 and 2359 will battle to make it to the first page of top 24/48 yet if it was uploaded between 0000 and 0600 it may end up pic of the day.
Its always interesting to check the new upload page just after midnight site time to see what gets uploaded and i still find it unuasual to see the same names appearing time and again.
Views are from where i sit a very POOR way to judge the quality of a photo and hence how good a photograher is and given how flawed the system we have at the moment is doesn't help at all.
Sam is a great photographer however exploring angles few people have thought of and very willing to listen to advice and idea's so congrate to him for getting his 2000th photo up.

Not to rain on the party here......but when you have the resources and time to travel the globe to places that offer excellent views AND get access that mere mortals don't get, its not surprising.

That's like comparing photos taken by one of Mick Jagger's Roadies to a photo taken by a typical 'Stones fan at a concert. No comparison.

Yeah, Sam's a rich dude but instead of playing golf all day and driving a lamborghini around town- both of which he can do- he chooses to travel the world in search of unique airliner photos. Who's better than him?

Darren,
I totally agree with your statement and that thing with the upload time is not justice to all, but obviously it has something to do with the scripts of airliners.net.
I still don't know why not every upload stays exactly 48 hours in the first page of top (then) 48 hours, but as you stated : Good spot about not caring about views.
We are not forced to upload to this site and as we decide to do we have to accept the rules.
However, to be honest: If I really like a shot and other people feel the same way, isn't it a good feeling?

By the way, you are not asking the European screeners to do their 'work' in the hours after midnight only, aren't you?  Wink/being sarcastic

Hi Gerhard
Yep it is a good feeling to see a nice shot from somewhere i have never been or am likely to go.
I have no idea why a photo can't sit on the 24/48 page for 48hrs rather than 25.
Just a pity that so many awesome shots go by the wayside without their fair share of time on the most important 24/48 page.
Without a good upload time its destined for obscurity in no time and that s the sad part. With so many photo's being uploaded a great photo at the wrong time will disappear into the DB as most of us havn't the time to spend scouring it looking for the odd ripper shot.

I'm not saying Sam is a bad photographer. He has the skills and obviously the passion for aviation and is probably a nice guy to hang out with. What I'm saying is that this 2000/2000 plateau can be reached by anyone with the time & resources - even me if I had it. But I'll never get there shooting CRJ"s from outside the fence.

Never mind the negative tones of parts of this thread Mr. Chui. Anyone who reach 2000/2000 on A.net is top class.
Sam obviously has the recources, and he makes maximum use of those resources to produce photo's that keep on stunning me time and time and time again.

Keep them coming Sam, I will never get bored looking at your photo's!

First of all congrats to Sam, he is really one of the best in here but I find it dificult to judge who is the "best photographer" because everybody has diferent styles and oportunities to shoot. I couldn't say somebody is the best.

AGAIN and AGAIN... its always the same names.

I think A.net should have a more even system to upload all the photos of the day at a certain time or so, not the same guys shots first and then the rest...

Juan, you are mistaken.

Photos are screened and added to the database in the order they are upload. There is the rare "jump ahead" for something worthy of a banner (aka newsworthy) but the people with high hit averages have their pictures added in the same way that EVERYONE has theirs added.

It is a very fair system.

Royal:
I belive you and what you say, but I think Darren's post is true in some way.
I've uploaded pics at 0:01hrs (Sweden time) and been on the last bunch added of that day when they come up for screening.

Anyways, I don't care much for that and I believe you guys don't choose what to screen or what not (if you did then the queue would be a mess). You just get the next on the queue and screen it, but maybe there are some luchy guys to always have their shots screened at the best time...

Just my two cents... Now I hope you screen my next bunch at a good time  Big thumbs up

HI Clickhappy.
Like Juan i don't think there is any bias in the system towards favoring any particular photographers.
However it is far from a fair system.
A photo which is uploaded at 2355 gets 24hrs and 5 mins coverage on 24/48 while a photo which is uploaded 10 mins later gets 47hrs 55 mins coverage.
How is that a fair and equal system.
Now if this site didn't push the whole concept of hits so dramatically this wouldn't really matter but the site does.
With top of the day,top of the week, top of the month everything depends on initial success on the first day and a large part of that comes from the upload time.
I have seen numerous outstanding images dissappear into the abyss of the DB because they where unfortunate enough to be uploaded in the last few hours prior to rollover.
I really cant see why a photo cannot sit on the 24/48 page for 48hrs after upload and then it is automatically removed. You could even get rid of the 48 part and just have it a 24hr page rather than a 24/48 or have both.
Fair and equal as every photo spends 48hrs on the 24/48 page.
Darren

How is that a fair and equal system.

It's fair in that everone has an equal chance of having their picture(s) added at either time, 11:59 or 12:01. Its just the way the ball bounces.

The solution you suggest would be quite difficult to implement from a programatic point of view, which is (I am guessing here) that something like this hasn't been tried in the past.

There would be a ton of overhead to the database server(s) with the solution you suggest. So, maybe run a batch job every 4 hours? Every 8 hours? Where do you draw the line?

I see your point, but why is it even an issue? The photogs that consistently upload quality shots and quality subjects are going to get the clicks their shots warrant.

Well,

as I said before:
We are not forced to upload to airliners.net and as we do so we have to accept the rules.
However, there is at least one other site (although much smaller size and importance), which implemented the system Darren and I are suggesting.

Shouldn't airliners.net be the benchmark ( and in most aspects already is!  Smile) for all others?
Maybe an IT specialist is able to help us here?

Thanks Gerhard making a post and your email.

This is all making my very flattering. I really never thought about this, but now is time to look up 3000/3000 ???

Bruce, i understand your point and I take no offense on that, it is somehow quite challenging to shoot on ramp with stress, position and timings and many factors to take account into.

I am sure there is a lot of photog do better than i do, but let's ease the competition and all enjoy our hobby.
