Genuine Photo Request From Usaf?

Wed Oct 13, 2004 4:01 am

Hi everybody,

today I received a request from the USAF apparantly. Something tells me however this one is not genuine. There's something fishy about it, for example the USAF wanting a photo of a Virgin Express 737? A written permission? 21st of September?

I'm not even going to reply to this one, even though A.net asks every photographer to do so.

Anyway, here's the request:

21 September 2004

MEMORANDUM FOR COPYRIGHT PERMISSION

FROM: VISUAL INTELLIGENCE FLIGHT

SUBJECT: Permission to use copyright photos

1. The 36 IS has been charged with developing recognition training materials to include posters, videos, web pages, computer based training, etc. Our products are for official Department of Defense use only and do not generate a profit. To date, we are the sole government source for recognition training materials and we maintain over 10,000 products that are utilized by 300+ agencies worldwide.

2. One of our jobs is to find as many photos as possible of worldwide systems. We've noticed you have taken several exceptional photos and we would like permission to utilize them for an indefinite period of time. For your permission, we will identify you as the photographer for advertisement purposes.

3. If you will allow this, please send written permission to 36 IS/INV, 34 Elm Street, Langley AFB, VA 23665, Attn: Visual Recognition Branch. If you have any question, contact my Branch Chief at (757) 225-3447.

WALTER K. NAPOLEON, Capt, USAF

I know an a.net photographer who received the same request but I won't say who it is unless he actually steps forward. Donno what became of his contacts with this person.

Tim

Had one as well. There is a thread about it here somewhere. I don't think there was anything conclusive said in it, other than that they do not pay.
It takes a big man to admit they are wrong, and I am not a big man.

I received the same email a couple of weeks or so ago. I got into contact with Capt. Napoleon. These requests that they are sending out are in fact legit. They take the pictures and make posters out of them for use by fighter pilots to help them learn how to identify aircraft in flight. I forget the exact acronym that they use, but they look at the tail, wing, engine, and nose areas. The Captain said that USAF doesn't give him any money to give out for these pictures. Credit will be given to the photo though. It seemed like a good cause, so I agreed to let them use my photo.

Thanks for the comments so far.

TWAMD-80: You wouldn't by accident have an email address of this captain? If so, can you send it to me?

Greets,
Ivan

Apuneger, sorry but I do not have his email. I gave that number a call and asked for him. I can see though that from your location, that may be a problem. I'll look around and see if I can find his email.

As a taxpayer I'd much rather supply them with the photos they want as I did last year rather than spend a billion bucks sending photogs around the world and ending up with inferior shots to what they can get from us. It's to prevent friendly fire as mentioned in the original thread.

A long way...prolly on the order of 150-200 miles or so...Langley is in southeastern Virginia in the Norfolk/Newport News area...closest commercial airport would probably be ORF...
