What To Do With This One?

Sun Nov 14, 2004 1:37 pm

It snowed in Connecticut last night, and I decided to drive out to Bradley Airport to get my first snow shots of the year. Unfortunately, I found out quickly enough Runway 6 was the active, not good news as there are really no good spots to work in some background scenery on that runway. I did manage to find a hill that allowed me to work in the runway and approach lights, but the aircraft from that vantage point are quite distant and are going away from you. Nonetheless, I decided to take some pictures to see what the results would be like.

Overall, I'm happy with how some of these turned out, but I'm not sure if they're a.net material. Here's an example:

This was created at 800x600 with high .jpg compression so I could post to a message board, so don't critique it on that level. What I'm more concerned with is composition. In a shot like this, is it still a requirement that the aircraft be perfectly centered? Centering the 757 chops off either the runway or many of the approach lights, which I think are the most appealing elements. How about the "going away" aspect of the photo? Is a higher-resolution version of this even worth uploading or should I put this in the "personal collection" category and go on to bigger and better subjects?

Thanks!!

John,

I think in terms of motive and composition it is acceptable, a nice shot you have! Let's see a 1024 wide version - and if the quality is there, give it a go!

I like it, but I think it would need a more "dramatic" background, not just a plain blue sky, in order to be accepted.

You might give it a try, though, as Florian says.

Hi John.

The one on the Q seems to be a different photograph. I know you could have cropped off some sky and some runway but the plane looks lower...Anyways , good shot  Big thumbs up

Here is one that I got accepted

With 44,000 hits on your shot, I don't think any apologies are called for in posting it here. Excellent picture!!

Yes, the one I ultimately submitted was different than the earlier link. The plane was a bit lower at that point, which I thought made the approach lights stand out a bit more. I snapped off about 8 pictures of the approach sequence, so I had some choices at my disposal.

Ah well - she got rejected for "baddistance". Kind of tough to zoom in on the aircraft AND show the surroundings, so I guess this was an experiment gone awry.
