Have A Question For Film Users

Sun Nov 21, 2004 4:44 pm

I have a friend that is using the Canon 35MM Rebel and all her pictures are coming out the bottom half is exposed and the top half is all black.
Is this caused by a bad shutter curtain or anything else.

I believe the Rebel uses a vertical shutter blade arrangement, so it does indeed sound like the upper blades are stuck - possibly they got damaged while loading film. I assume you mean ALL pictures come out this way ... you would get a similar effect with flash if the shutter speed was set higher than the sync speed.

Have the UK equivalent, Canon 300V. Colin's conclusion is fairly accurate (as it happened to me! )

To check that this is the problem, when you have no film in the camera, turn the camera on and leave the back open so you can see the shutter blades. Set to tv, set the exposure to one second.

If the shutter doesn't retract fully, then that's your problem as Colin describes. If not, then it's back to the drawing board.
