CVG Photography Trip This Week

Tue Nov 23, 2004 8:21 am

Headed back to CVG for Thanksgiving week. Any "change of direction" with the Airport police as far as their friendlieness goes towards photographers? Outside of the last trip where they were a bit on the edgy side, they have been superb in the past...mostly friendly and outgoing to photographers.

Airport parking garage still available for photographers? Any insight would be appreciated. I intend to be there Wed, Fri and Sat...weather permitting. Damn forecast says snow....I like the summer time much better!!

Hi Jim,

I have been to CVG a couple days ago and had no problem at the viewing area. I am here in the CVG area till Saturday. The worst part about it here is the weather.....cloudy and grey everyday since I got here and no end in sight. I will be there on Friday, if you see a blue Trailblazer stop by and say hi.

Go to the viewing area early in the morning then when the sun gets too high go to the parking garage and face east.

I will be flying through CVG in Dec. My layover will be short and I was wondering if there are any places to shoot traffic from inside the terminal?

Thanks
Adam

Adam there is lots of good places, but primarily in the center/food court area and both ends of concourse B, I am assuming you will be on DL, in which case (if your on mainline) you will be in the B concourse. If not, CVG is VERY easy to get around, and it doesn't take much time at all. Have fun in Delta country!!  Big thumbs up (You know...you could take me!)

Thanks for the info....I was there a total of 19 days this summer...almost like a home away from home when visiting family in Cincinnati...

Corey- will do. I will be in a maroon Suburban. More than likely sitting on top of it if not raining. I'll be there Wednesday for sure; maybe Thursday morning and then again on Friday.

Bruce-no problems with the garage? They became problamatic in TUL with the garage. The CVG garage is super for afternoon, especially with 18L arrivals and departures.

What is the primary wind direction....are they using the 18's or 36's?

Another good place to go is the Delta/Comair office building parking lot. I'm not sure if you are really supposed to park there or not, but for short term viewing/photography its great and a lot closer than the provided viewing area. I'm not sure if it's L or R, (kind of new at the observing) but its very close to the intersection of 18 & 36. Usually CRJs are taking off to your right (about 50 feet off the ground by the time they are seen from behind the building) and the larger planes (737s, MDs, 757s, 767s, etc) are landing/taking off directly in front of you. You definitely get a better sound experience being that close. The best part is when a DHL 727 takes off or lands. Those are really noisy! Mostly all Delta planes, but they still operate a lot of 737-200s which are great! I sometimes see an Air France A340 at the terminal, but have no idea when to be there to see it arrive or leave. I'll have to try out the parking garage next time I go. BTW, I've never been hassled by security while viewing at CVG, although I don't give them any reason to. The only time I've seen someone getting attention was when a guy had a huge camera tripod set-up in the provided viewing area. I guess they thought he was going to slap a gun on it or something. But, the security people have a job to do, can't complain there!

The first day went great despite a rainy morning. The definite highlights were the Lufthansa MD-11 cargo taking off with huge clouds of vapor riding up over the wings. Have the RAW pix of her but will have to get them prepared prior to uploading. The other bonus of the day was the NW Cargo 742 bound for Anchorage. The balance was a seemingly never-ending stream of CRJs, ERJs, 732s, 752s and 763s, all in DL and DL Connection of course....

Not a lot of variety but the quantity makes up for it. Looking forward to another 3 days out there; hopefully with some sun. There is snow forecast for Thursday so there may be some potential for neat shots despite the overcast conditions.
