In Search Of A Good Wide Angle Zoom!

Wed Nov 24, 2004 3:43 pm

Wanted to get some info from personal use, of which wide angle zooms are giving everyone the best results. I'm using a digi SLR so I really want to go around 15mm-80mm. Of course that probably won't be possible but somewhere in that range. I'm mainly concerned at the wider end........also I don't have unlimited funds!!! Basically I need a good lens that I won't have to replace after a year of use! Looking for your suggestions!

I have the 28-105mm which is around $80 cheaper, great little lens to have....but probably not wide enough for you. I went for the Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8. Primarily because I was on a budget and I got it for $300, works well for me though.

Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 EX DG Aspherical HSM $489

I shoot Nikon, and have great results with both the Nikon 12-24 and the Sigma 15-30. The Nikon costs about twice the Sigma ($1000 US).

It would help if you told us what sort of body you're using, else the recommendations may not be appropriate.

Lyzzard.................10D body. The main uses would be close ramp type shots, i.e. where you have unlimited access to the subject. BUT, I also need one that could be used on close-in approach shot situations!! I just want to make sure all bases are covered!!(well, as well as they can be!!)
Thanks all who have replied!

You say you need a super wide lens and a telezoom lens, which is not available as a single lens so far, as far as my knowledge goes...

Altough a bit expensive, I think you would cover both criterias perfectly with a Canon 16-35 and a Canon 35-350...

The Canon ED 17-40 is an awesome lens. It's more than i thought it would be performancewise.
