Scanner Cleaning

Sat Dec 04, 2004 5:31 am

Needed to return to my scanner for an old slide last night (Nikon 4000ED). Well, I did my best, but the results were not good ... OK, I've got used to that clean digital look, but still, a good slide and a good scanner should produce decent results.

Anyway, after thinking about it and doing a little searching round the web, I realised it might just be dirty. Its 3 or 4 years old, and never been cleaned. So armed with the instructions at this site:

I decided to give it a go. Well, the mirror was filthy - not just a bit dusty, but a layer of dirt & grime - I don't know how it relected any light at all!

Just did a rescan, and the results are much more what I'd expect.

So, if you still use a scanner, maybe think about giving it a clean. Note that it does seem that Nikon scanners are more prone to "dirty mirror syndrome" than other makes.

I read an article on the web a few years ago written by someone who did the same thing with a Coolscan III. He showed a scan from before the clean and one from after. There was a big difference in detail and contrast! Had totally forgotten about that until I read this.
My minolta SD II is over 3 years old now and while I don't use it much now it has been used quite a lot and still gets used occasionally, wonder what state its interior is in..
Now that you've posted this I'll have to open it up and have a look Big grin

Thanks for sharing!

Well, I've opened mine up just to discover that it hasn't got a mirror, the lens focuses directly on the film and to get at the lens and CCD I guess the whole thing has to come appart, disconnecting internal cables etc. Nothing I'm particularly tempted to do.
Thing is I've been getting two coloured stripes across some of my scans lately and according to what I've read it's because of dust on the CCD. Tried to blow away as much dust as I could, will have to try a few scans to see if it got rid of it or made it worse.
