Canon Digital Rebel?

Tue Dec 07, 2004 9:34 am

I dont really frequent this forum so forgive me if this has been discussed to death.

I was wondering if any of you recommend this camera because I was thinking of getting one for Christmas. I was thinking of using the Christmas bonus that I get yearly. Do any of you have this camera and have you had any problems with it?

Should I buy it or not?

Thanks in advance.

The Canon Digital Rebel is a great camera, I and many many many other people would recommend this camera. Do a search in the photo db for "Canon Digital Rebel" or just "300D" and you'll find LOTS of shots.

How experienced are you with photography?

Usairwys757 - All my photos on the database are taken with the 300D (Rebel). I am very happy with it.

It has not let me down so far - I have let myself down, but I can't blame the camera for those failures! But the results straight out of the camera always need some work to get them looking okay.

All the best.

Its a great entry level DSRL but it is only as good as the lens you put on the front of it, and the processing you do after.

A Canon Digital Rebel plugfest? Sure, I'll get onboard!

I'd HIGHLY reccommend the Digital Rebel. It's easy to learn, easy to use, and will give you AMAZING results in many different conditions. It's also great to have access to the entire line of Canon lenses!

Sure thing! Big grin It's a great entry-level camera, which will give you great results when used properly! Make sure you keep enough money for a good lens though...they can't be forgotten, as they are just as, if not more, important than the camera itself!

Vasco - I understand the point you are making and I was feeling a bit shy about including my own photos.

But I justified it in my own mind by thinking that showing some photos, with some information about lenses used, would provide Travis with the best kind of information on which he can make his own assessment.

I don't think this is 'Look at me and my fantastic photos'; it's more 'this is the kind of quality of image that I get with this equipment'. As we can see from people's photos in this thread, the camera (with, of course, a decent lens and in capable hands) will produce good results.

Hope I don't sound too defensive.

I've got some really good stuff in the queue right now that I've shot in the last few days with a Canon 100-400mm L IS lens... We'll see what gets accepted and then I'll post some of that stuff.

Excellent camera as long as you learn how to pace yourself while trying to take multiple shots in a row. The camera doesn't write to the card as fast or have quite the frame buffer of the 10D, 20D, etc... Either way, it has never been a problem for me.

Vasco-

You seem to be distracted by all the pretty pictures, did you read the text as well? Here are some highlights:

"It has not let me down so far - I have let myself down, but I can't blame the camera for those failures! But the results straight out of the camera always need some work to get them looking okay."

" I HIGHLY recommend the camera!"

"Its a great entry level DSRL but it is only as good as the lens you put on the front of it, and the processing you do after."

"I'm sure you will not be disappointed"

"I'd HIGHLY reccommend the Digital Rebel. It's easy to learn, easy to use, and will give you AMAZING results in many different conditions. It's also great to have access to the entire line of Canon lenses!"

"Sure thing! It's a great entry-level camera, which will give you great results when used properly! Make sure you keep enough money for a good lens though...they can't be forgotten, as they are just as, if not more, important than the camera itself!"

"I don't think this is 'Look at me and my fantastic photos'; it's more 'this is the kind of quality of image that I get with this equipment'. As we can see from people's photos in this thread, the camera (with, of course, a decent lens and in capable hands) will produce good results."

In short, we all are of the opinion that it is a fantastic camera, a great value, and I will add that yes, it is very dependable and I've personally not had any problems with mine.

That being said - there's nothing wrong with plugging. I saw one of the very early 300D plug threads - and that made me buy mine. I read all the reviews on earth - and was fairly sold - but when I started seeing the real images coming out of the camera, I finally got up off the cash and bought one. A picture is worth a thousand words. So let the plugfest continue.  Big thumbs up

Drew

I found the 300D to be a great camera. All my pics on A.net are with it. And I have several 1000 other pics on my pc that i'm just too lazy to upload.

I found it to be great as I got to learn about digital SLR's, but the time has come to upgrade, so over the winter when I wont be spotting, I'm selling the 300D, hopefully to buy a 10D or 20D (depending upon money)

Thanks for the response Vasco...The guy asked if we thought the 300D was a good camera or not, and if we recommend it. What better way to show how much we like it than by showing some nice photos that were taken with it? As Drew thankfully pointed out (I was about to do the same!), most of us also wrote a little bit along with the photos to justify our showing of shots!

Would you find it more appropriate to find 15 posts saying "It's a great camera. Buy it."? I as the thread starter would just think "ok, so now show me!"...But then again, that's just me...

Since we are all using this thread to show off, allow me. I've had the 300D for about 6 months now, and I love it. Combined with the 70-200 f4L, it got me in to an airport mock disaster at SWF two weeks ago. I'd would never have been able to do that before getting this camera. Here is the first shot from that day that I have posted. (and the second shot I've had accepted).

I hope to load a few more up over the next several weeks, work and time allowing. Although I am a Canon fan, I do think you cannot go wrong with either Canon or Nikon. I do think that, for a beginner, you should buy the low end body first and learn all the nuances of digital SLR's, and let the technology move forward. Then, when you are ready to make the next step, you can upgrade to the newest technology, and either use the old body as a spare, or give it to your kids to learn with.

I've decided to buy this awesome thing and partly because of your great reviews and shots. Thanks again everyone, keep on plugging in here if you wish.

I chose to buy this camera b/c I use it daily at my school in my Journalism class. I was told though that the silver/gold color chips if you scrape it so I went ahead and got the black body. I have spent the past few days messing around with it and LOVE it even more now that I have one of mine. It's a great camera and in my opinion is worth every penny. Some say it's too expensive and should be cheaper but if you think about it what you get is WAY more than what you pay.

Thanks again!

I got mine new as the kit with the 18-55mm back in July for $740 with no tax (I live in TN and purchased from NJ) and I love it!

I've put about 9500 shots through it since then with no problems whatsoever.

BTW, I mentioned above that I would soon have some shots in the database that were taken with the 300D using a 100-400L IS - they are now online.

There are a few scattered in the newly accepted photos that were still taken with the 75-300 IS, but majority of my new photos are with the 100-400L IS that I am currently borrowing from Paul Robbins until he gets his 20D for Xmas...
