Urgent Advise On Print Sale Required!

Wed Dec 08, 2004 5:20 am

Well after a huge amount of time and trouble (and a bit of help from you guys) i look like i have at last got my first SERIOUS sales request on a print....
I received the following request...

in that brochure, most likely on the cover. Can you please advise what your fee would be to allow us to use a large-format, high-resolution photo for single publication, with unlimited printing? Please feel free to contact me if you should have any questions or comments regarding this request.

I have checked out the company and they are a major NASDAQ company. Not a one man band but a serious corporation  Smile  Smile

PLEASE can someone advise on what a fair price on the above would be.... I don't want to seem greedy , but don't want to undercut myself. I am going to have to out lay some serious money in the next couple of month on new equipment and realy need to recoup some cash !!!

URGENT help required as i wish to impress..... Looks like ALL my hourse of learning may have at last come good  Big thumbs up

Hmmm, i assume they are american... I might ask for $200 and see what sort of a responce they give me. Is the shot unique? Do they specifically NEED that image and no other? Its gonna be tough i know and I would wait till some of the more seasoned members reply...  Smile

Yes i would say the shot is pretty unique as it captures an aircraft landing and the blades of the engine are frozen.... It was the best light of the year and i was able to get 1/1000. Its a pretty cool picture and one i have seen very few of.

The company are involved in the sale of aircraft engines. As i said its a major corporation in the USA..... The picture is perfect for them and i gather thats why they have picked it from the thousands of others on A.Net....  Smile

most likely on the cover ... with unlimited printing

For this, USD200 is WAY TOO LOW... Imagine they make ten million of copies, and on the next week you will find your shot on the cover of a brochure which lies in almost every bank accross Europe, the US and Asia  Big grin And all you got is 200 bucks.

I would further ask them, what exactly that brochure is about and how large the photo on the cover should be. I would say everything below 500USD is too few!

You also might consider this website for pricing suggestions!

Good luck,

US$200 is indeed too low. I got that much for a spot use on a brochure circulation of 10,000+...

This should turn out very profitable for you. My guess is it's General Electric and they want this photo?

Make sure you ask for enough! Unlimited printing rights, as mentioned above, are very precious!

Good luck!

Yes, you CAN get that much! Of course it's all a win / loose game. The photo price calculator tells you 675-1100, so if you want to be on the save side ask for USD 600, even the Dollar is quite low at the moment.

Just a bit bigger than my last sale (well i let them publish it for nothing) to a Dutch newspaper called "De Gelderlander"..

Hi Simon,
Well, if the calculator suggests at least $675, I would not dip too low! You have a very nice picture there, and what seems to be a legitimate company. It's obvious that they will be making profit (directly or indirectly) through your picture. Other photographers with similarly high quality pictures would most likely also ask similarly high prices. If you really want to be safe, ask around the 600-700 mark, and my guess is you have gotten yourself a really good deal! If the company is as serious as you said, they will understand that photos cost money too, and they will pay. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!

Unlimited printing? You should ask for at LEAST $1,000. I'd tell them to take a walk otherwise. Not to sound greedy, but it's your fair share.

Either way, congrats and good luck! It's always nice to make some money from your hobby.

Keep us posted.

URGENT HELP AGAIN PLEASE !!!!!!

All is going well  Smile They have replied and stated they are awaiting confirmation....But they have now asked me to confirm what the DPI is on the image.....

Now i always thought DPI (Dots per inch) was a printer thing..... I have already given them the pixel size ie 1290x945.... And also the imgae size of the unedited image...

Anyone any idea if i can give them what their asking for  Smile Or are THEY just getting confused....

Thanks all

I think that 1290 x 945 is not enough for the cover....unless it is 3" x 6" publication.

1290x945 pixel at 300dpi (300 pixels per-printed-inch)
= a picture size of only 4.3 x 3.15 inches

For example, if you can e-mail them a 3000 x 2400 pixel image, they can
change it to 300dpi and give themselves a straight 10 inch x 8 inch photo.

You could prepare it with your photo programme to nominate it to
print at 300dpi, can't you?

300dpi is the normal print request Simon.

I hope this rough guide is suitable.

Gerry

Open the original in Photoshop, press "Alt" while clicking the text at the bottom right of the window where it says "Doc:***K/***K". At the bottom it will show the resolution. It can also be found in "Image"->"Image size", where it can be changed too.

How big is the camera, 3 mil pixels? I don't think thats going to be enough ooomph for a 8 1/2 x 11 picture. And for $600 you better be giving them the nuts, not some interpolated hackjob!

No its a 6.2 mil Camera not a 3 mil picture job. Don't worry Royal i wont do a "interpolated hack job"  Smile

The edited image was 1280x900 pixels

The unedited picture was appx 2800x2100 so after an acceptable crop i would say its going to be 2600x1950 appx.

Thanks for the guide Gerry & Stefan i will check the image on my photoshop 7 programme and reply to them. Cheers  Big thumbs up

Steep learning curve all this but thanks for all the help guys.
