Monopod/tripod Question

Are monopods and tripods ever used to photograph MOVING objects, like planes?

A friend of mine in California (and distinguished photographer here on airliners) uses a monopod for many of his shots which I'm sure includes planes, and I know it includes helicopters. In fact, I've been thinking about getting a monopod myself.

I've seen a few guys using Wimberley tripod heads when using large telephoto lenses.

At Farnborough this year I got talking to a guy using one, he let me try it out, perfectly balanced, although the price may put many off  Sad

If I could just get the afterburner working...
