Commercial Sales At A.net?

Thu Dec 23, 2004 10:20 pm

There's an interesting discussion in Site-Related about the possibility of a
Commercial Sales feature on Airliners.net.

If you haven't seen it, please visit and put in your feedback.

As showed in the thread you link to it is pretty obvious that a Commercial Sales feature would be of benefit to a LOT of photographers here.

I want this feature.

What is this the mutual admiration society?

"I have been reading with great interest regarding the photo sales aspect of all this and I agree totally with Phil. I recently removed my pics from the photo sales feature here for that same reason that I want to deal with the customers myself.

Depending on the customer I have allowed picture usage for free and for others charged hundreds of $. Sometimes the client goes elsewhere, so be it. It's a free market, just like we search the internet for the best deal before buying our camera or lenses so do people when buying images.

In addition many people have posted on here links to websites that help you determine what you should charge for your pics. Who will determine what is the market price? What will happen if you think that the prices are too high/ too low? If I was Johan I wouldn't want that headache.

As far as enjoying all the services for free, isn't it actually enjoying the services for free if commercial sales transactions become a.net's or Johan's responsibility?
If you want to market your images as a business, set up your own image bank like http://www.gettyimages.com , put some effort into the business (i.e. website, paypal etc.) rather than wanting/demanding someone else to do all the work IMHO.

My $0.02"

I had posted the above on the other thread but it's relevant here too.

Cheers,
Kaz

>What is this the mutual admiration society?<
You mean you and Phil?

>I recently removed my pics from the photo sales feature<
This isn't about the print sales.

>Depending on the customer I have allowed picture usage for free<
Nothing is stopping you from that.

>Who will determine what is the market price?<
I guess The market? Comparing different price lists would give a good hint.

>What will happen if you think that the prices are too high/ too low?<
Either there is an agreement before going ahead with this, or you could just opt out.

>If I was Johan I wouldn't want that headache.<
Well, he said he could do it if the photographers wanted it.

>isn't it actually enjoying the services for free if commercial sales transactions become a.net's or Johan's responsibility?<
Johan would get a percentage, so no it isn't.
A.net would make money from it.

For those who need more input, here's a great thread about
a similar request.

I'd like to see such an (optional!) feature, but why is nobody replying anymore in the site related thread...?  Insane

We should keep this running if we really want that!

I think the only flaw with making this service optional is that If 50% of the photographers on here have their photo's for sale through this service and a company wants to purchase the rights to a rather common type of photo, the only people who are going to make sales are those that have the airliners.net service set up. It will soon become more or less mandatory if you want to have any hope of selling your images. I could be way off base here, but I think the whole thing would get way too confusing. Some photographers want to set their own prices, others don't. Compound that with the seemingly innumerable amount of variables that could affect the price of the usage and I question the feasibility of such a system.

What innumerable variables are you referring to?

Different uses of the photo. Today on the forum, I even read of a company who wanted to buy a photo from a photographer to paint on the side of their truck!

As suggested, very special uses would still need to be handled differently. But what about the other 99%?
