I Practiced..will These Make It?

Tue Jan 11, 2005 2:02 am

I have been spotting now for about a year but I never really even tried to upload because I didn't feel my pix were good enough yet and I didn't want to spam the upload queue  Big grin ....

Now I think I am improving..please be so helpful and take a look at my shots below..

ALL INPUT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! I use a Canon 300D with a Voigtlander 210mm lens..

I would also love to hear some tips about editing the pix afterwards in software etc..

Thanks guys for your help!

Regards,
Patrick

I love that ryanair shot, however its too far away I would think it'd get rejected for bad distance...

The military shots look fine. be sure that you upload at 1024x768

Patrick, Nice shot for someone just getting started! I really like the RyanAir shot. However, I think it looks a little over sharpened. I would also crop it much tighter to the plane to create a more dramatic picture - most of space around the plane is uninteresting.

The Ryanair shot has to much contrast and is to far away.

I think you will have to crop slightly tighter with the military shots, there is also a little noise evident - they may get rejected.

If you can process them again and only sharpen specific parts of the images then they stand a good chance.

Best of luck.
Ian.

Patrick,
I would adjust the levels on the F5 pictures. They are kind of dark. Send me an email and I will send back to you an example of what I mean.

your going to have to edit them, why is it that this forum is becoming a QnA for people to see if there photos are going to make it or not?!?!

if you have doubts then i think you may well know the answer without asking us, we don't even know whos going to screen these shots let alone know if they are going to read this thread.

just upload, if you get rejected then ask for help, don't ask before you've even got an answer back from the screeners.

GRZ- the ryanair shot is 1024x580, it will get rejected for badcropping-badborders. It has to be in the 1024x768 whereabouts, or in the same proportion.

is 1050x713, so more or less 1024x768

"why is it that this forum is becoming a QnA for people to see if there photos are going to make it or not?!?!

At the risk of stating the obvious, it's because it's a photography forum on an aviation website.

It's good that people ask before uploading whether they think a certain shot is worthwhile, because it can save the hassle of a rejection and a screener's time. Experienced photographers can give lots of valuable feedback, and you do occasionally get a screener chipping in with an opinion.

With regard to the images, aside from sizing them correctly, have a look at the levels. Use the levels/histogram feature in Photoshop (or equivalent) and adjust the tonal range; the pictures have a muggy/brownish look that's characteristic of the levels you can get straight out of the camera, i.e. a bit of noise either end of the tonal range. Using the same tool or the 'curves' function you can also brighten the shadows a little - that's what is giving you that really contrasty look.

The F5's and the chubby little silver thing (marvel at my recognition skills) are certainly up to scratch and with a little work would be great.

Cheers

James

That has to be the most unhelpful reply I have ever seen !!!

As Miguel say, when cropping try and keep the aspect ratio very close to 4:3. There are times when this can be ignored but only for exceptional shots with a special motive.

learn how to spell, Qantas is written in BnW and you still muck it up!  Big grin

serious though, why don't new uploaders start out by reading the thread created by Glenn Stewart about tips for editing. then make an effort to edit them with those tips and then wait and see what the screeners have to say after uploading the shot's then ask for help, it's trial and error, your not going to know unless you give it a go!  Big grin

This is the Photography Forum and I am here to learn more about photography and editing from others experiences, and from this, hopefully get my shots right first time. If that means "will this make it?" type questions, then so be it.

I personally find this type of thread far more valuable to my photography than the "congratulations/great pic/plug my shot" threads that often appear here.

We've been down this road before. The new uploaders who bother to come to the Photography Forum to ask often have read the threads you mention. However, even after the reading all the advise given, as a beginner you will sometimes still need a second opinion and that is why this forum is invaluable and will always have "is it worth uploading this shot" threads.

Qantas077

You have a point. When I first joined, I read the forum for about a month checking every rejection thread. What the problem was and how other photographers gave tips on how the photos can be rectified. I do agree that new up loader’s should do more research and check the forum for past threads on tips, but not every person knows that.

BUT, we are here to help, and the information I got from fellow photographers was invaluable. I also believe that we shouldn’t be wasting the screeners time either with unnecessary uploads. To post a few photos here to see if they can be fixed before they are uploaded is a good idea. There is only so much you can learn from reading threads. You need to post your photo and ask other photographers for the input.

I would agree with Miguel, that the Ryanair is cropped wrong, you need to keep the ratio of 4:3 as much as possible and this can be set in PS so that you can crop it right each time. Crop a lot closer to the plane and you might get the right size. It will be rejected for bad size!

Good luck  Big thumbs up

I'm not having a crack, i just think that asking here about rejections is the best way to learn learn more about your submissions, the best way to learn what not to submit is to browse this forum and look for the tips from other photographers, not to ask if this shot or that shot will make it?!?

only the screeners make that decision, they might find something that even us seasoned uploaders neglect to notice, so i rekon just submit and see where it takes you! if you get a positive responce then you know your on the right road, if not, have a raed of the tips etc.

Thank you all very much for your input!

As I stated in my first post, I do not want to block the upload queue even more by just "giving it a shot" eacht time I come home from spotting...

If I upload pictures they HAVE to be looked at by the screeners, using up (valuable) time and resources..

In a thread like mine, only the ones who wish may read it and further can add their opinion and advice.. -> Outcome: The Photogs who are more experienced have their pix added on faster  Big grin !

This is simply the best place one can ask for advice, even if you read a million explanations in previous threads and other websites, nothing compares to the help and the advances one can experience right here!

Thanks,

Patrick
