Terminal Spotting At STN

Thu Jan 13, 2005 9:21 pm

Hi

I'll be in Stansted in early february connecting on Ryanair. I'll be 3,5hrs waiting for my flight and I was wondering if there is any chance of taking photos from the terminal. Is there any problems being at the windows pointing a 400mm at the planes? Does it have any decent views, apron, taxiway?

Thanks for you help,
Luis Gonçalves

Hello Luis,

STN is not easy for photography ( been there in 2003 ), but as you fly FR you will depart from their own concourse.
You have a quite nice view on aircraft at the gates and on the apron around, can't remember exactly what's about the RWY view. If runway 23 is in use landings are visible from the concourse also. I don't know about the focal length needed for these.

When you say 400mm I guess you have a 100-400? For shooting aircraft at the gates and even the apron 100mm might be too big, so take a smaller glass with you!

BTW: You received my email a couple of days ago?

Hi Florian

Thanks for the reply. I don't have the 100-400, but the SIGMA EX80-400.
I received your email. Unfortunately, I'll have to be in work during January, so I'll have to postpone my trip to Austria. Perhaps in March I'll be able to visit INN again.

Hi Luis.
Have been at STN two times. And as I remember the windows have been very dirty with very low chances of taking good pics. But the views are great from FR concourse.
Adios, Georg.

Do they use jetways at STN? Or do you walk to a stand? If you walk to the stand, would they mind someone popping out a camera while walking to the plane?

Terminal photography isn't the greatest at STN, but if you come out of the actual terminal and stand on the left of it, on the upper level, you can see most of the movements from above the train station. You'll be kind of opposite the cargo ramp. RYR pretty much occupies most of the airport, and the general idea is that boarding is done by foot! Be quick with the camera as they like to shepard you in/out ASAP! As INNflight mentioned, if RWY23 is in ops, then decent enough shots can be taken from the far end of the Easterly concourse/pier. The TDZ is near enough right in front of you. Or, you can always try this site out:

Hello.

When I deplaned by foot one of the FR 733's and rose my camera up, I was immediately approached by security stuff and told to take it away. You have to be very very quick.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. Will do my best to enjoy the few hours available at STN. I'll try to flight back to STN later in the year, when the weather is more favourable...
