You Pick: A 300D And Lens Or A Trip To Australia..

Sun Jan 16, 2005 11:03 am

If you had $1600 Canadian and you sould choose either a 300D+ regular lens and a 75-300, or a trip to Australia with lodgin and food paid, what would you choose? Think that if you spend it, it will take another 6 months to earn it again.

Australia. Because what you really want is a 20D and a lens and it is more than that. How often do you get to go to Australia?

All these damm DSLR's and their lower prices..
An influx of photographers who now shoot with top quality SLR's with relative ease. It was something unheard of only a few years ago. I still hope to save up for one someday as it is also catching a tempting grip on me.

If I were you, I would scrap the DSLR and lens combo and go down to Austrailia. YOu can't beat the glory around the beaches of Sydney and its famous harbours and nightlife. If you currently shoot with a regular SLR and have a decent telephoto lens..
I think you shoudl be alright. Or save a few hundred more and buy the lens only and then go on the trip.

my two cents.

Credit cards are great... In October 2003 I picked up a 300D and then a week later found myself in Australia using it, because you need a decent camera to capture the beauty of Oz  Smile .

Go for Australia. Watch for a DSLR price slump later this year or 2006.

I think I'd go both.....

I've been back and forth all days moving my stuff from house to house.
I've passed the Harbour Bridge and Opera House about 3 times today, and I'm sure it only cost $5 in fuel  Big grin

But seriously, if you're coming down to Australia..... it's a very big place and so far from Europe. You have to do it seriously. Some spotting, some sightseeing.

Area wise, it's roughly the same size as mainland USA or continental Europe.
A short drive here is a 3 hour drive from Sydney to Canberra. A flight from Sydney to Perth (East to West) is around 5 hours. A flight from Hobart to Darwin (South to North) is over 5 hours.

As I've said before, I can help anyone with both.

Expect prices for hotels and food to be cheaper than Europe, but the Australian dollar is getting quite strong against the USD (not sure of effect against Euro).

get the camera, Australia won't run away and if you do come down here for spotting at another time your going to need a camera to take the photo's with!

I was faced with this decision back in 2003. I ended up going to Australia and using my parent's Olympus C-740. Unfortunately for me, I didn't get to do any actual spotting while I was there. For me, Australia was well worth it and I look forward to going back.

Monty's got a point. Australia's not going anywhere in a hurry (the country that is  Big grin).

If you do end up heading over Monty's way (Perth), make sure you go in winter. It doesn't matter how good your camera is.... heat haze is heat haze.
Perth to heat haze is like L.A. to smog....

Isn't that right Monty  Big grin

Go to OZ. The camera is only good until the next model comes out then "its out dated". If you dont go now there wount be many other chances where you have $1600 to spend on a vacation. Plus when you go there its ont OZ that you can visit but NZ is a 1 hour flight.

Perth to heat haze is like flies to shit, to bad it's pretty crap for spotting over here, but you can always go to the beach and do some spotting of the female kind!  Big grin

MNeo,

Thanks for mentioning New Zealand.
Folks, if you're coming to Australia - then New Zealand is also a MUST!!!

Hire a car on the South Island of New Zealand, and do a complete round trip (You'll have to go back again, because you can either do Mount Cook or go further down south - hard to do both).

Regarding the hour flight....

It's a short flight, but it's 3 hours - not 1 hour  Big grin
But New Zealand is closer to Sydney than Perth is!

Perth * ---------- 4/5 hours ----------* Sydney

Sydney * ----- 3 hours ----- * Auckland
