My 20D Gave Up On Me.... Or Was It The BG-E2?

Mon Jan 17, 2005 5:43 am

I was in Hamburg today and looked down onto the harbor in the nicest winter evening light and I thought "Gee, that would make a nice picture".
So I set up the tripod and put the 18-55 EF-S onto my 20D. All the sudden I noticed I couldn't focus anything anymore. Looking at the display, it also didn't show my CF card, and I couldn't access any menu. So I turned the camera off and nothing happened. The shutter speed, f value etc. was still in the display. The camera was basically frozen. I tried the On/OFF switch a couple more times, changed lenses, put the batteries in and out and nothing happened.
The thing finally came back to life after I had put off the battery grip at home later tonight. Now the BG-E2 is attached to it again, and it works like nothing has happened.
I had used the camera all day and it had worked just fine. Dunno how it came to fail so suddenly.

Has anybody had similar experiences like that? Is this normal?

I don't know the exact specifics, but I have heard many problems with the 20D battery grip.

The Cannon users will provide more info, but the contacts between the body and the battery grip are bad, so it causes all sorts of problems.

Next time buy a Nikon  Big thumbs up

How bad are these problems? Would it really be worth it to get the battery grip, if it's just going to continuously screw up things, with the camera. Just wondering because I'm considering getting a Canon 20D, and wouldn't mind knowing which accessories I should and should not be getting.

HI Lukas
The only problem i have had with the batt grip on the 20D is the thing likes to gradually unscrew itself.
After a while it loosens to the point it causes contact problems.
I know regularly check it for security.
Since then no problems and i had the same symptoms as you.

I used my 20D+grip yesterday and had no problems at all. Though i can confirm that Darren is correct in saying it does have an anoying habit of trying to unscrew itself. A little check every now and then seems to do the trick  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

A Problem that i have encountered... my grip was loose one time and I could see the LCD display flashing on and off and i was like WTF?  Wow!

Everytime you take the camera out the bag, a quick turn of the grip will prevent you from ever encountering any more problems like this  Big thumbs up

Thanks for all your replies, guys.

I tried to tighten the grip without any response. It wasn't until I took the whole grip off and back on that it showed any response.

Dehowie, your explanation makes sense. Could be that the contacts had slowly moved and came to the point where the whole thing had to be taken out and refitted.

LHRSIMON, I haven't had any problems with the grip before, it worked just fine. In fact, I thought the lens change I just did before the 20D crashed was responsible for the failure. Next time it happens, I'll check the grip right away.

Paulianer, I was at the T1 deck with a friend on the 23 line-up indeed.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Came there when the Iran Air took off and left at about four o'clock to take some evening shots of the harbor. Rest of story --> see first post.  Big grin
Where you there alone or with that spotter group right next to us?
Haven't uploaded any pics yet though. Used a Canon EF 75-300 III USM

Oh i just remembered the other problem i had with my grip. After my first shoot i recharged both battery to 100%. Yet when i replace them into the grip the battery level on the camera only showed half charged.

I then swapped the batteries over in their ports and the problem was solved !!!!
