Circular Vs. Linear Polarizing Filter

Mon Jan 17, 2005 7:48 pm

Hallo!

Right now I am planning on buying a polarizing filter for my EOS 300D - EF 100-400L combo and a soon-to-come EOS 300D - EF 17-40L combo. Doing some research I found out that there are "circular" polarizing filters and "linear" polarizing filters. The price-difference is not very dramatic, so I was wondering what the actualy difference between the two polarizers might be. Maybe someone can explain this to me, please. Which one should I get for my camera-lens-combination.

Thank you very much in advance, I really appreciate your help!

Cheers,

Michael

Circular, metering and/or AF won't work with just a linear filter.

I was talking to Steve Kempf who also has a 100-400L lens, he has a linear polarizer and it works fine. He has no problems with metering or auto focus.

Check this out for more information...

Hi Michael,

We recently discussed this matter in a similar thread about polarising filters. My understanding is that a circular polarising filter is necessary for your camera.

Here is a link that I posted then that gives the technical details if you are interested.

Hi guys!

Thanks a lot for your help and posting all the links. I will read further into this issue but as the price difference is not even 10€ I guess I won't take any chances and go for the cirucular polarizing filter right away then. But again, thank you very much for your help!!!

Cheers,

Michael
