Good Deal On A 300/F4 L Is?

Wed Jan 26, 2005 2:21 am

Hello all,
I was just searching around a bit, and I found this deal on the 300 F4 IS, which seemed pretty good...US$1,110.99. Is this the regular price to pay for it, or is it some sort of catch?

Hey Sebastian,

BHPhoto.com has the Canon 300mm F4 IS listed at US $1,139.95. However right now there is a US $45 rebate so the price is US $1,094.95.

Hope this helps,

They seem ok, http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1927.html

However i would go with BH/Adorama or Samy's when buying equipment. Even if you pay a little more you get a guarentee of reliability from their reputation.

Cheers, Chris

Well, I can also only recommend B&H, however the mail-in rebates they offer are only applicable for US customers. For a European order you can forget the rebate.

Cheers,
Tom

Thanks to all. Just a quick question. What are the capabilities of the 300 f/4 with a 1.4 and 2 extender? Does AF work? How is the quality? Does the IS work? Thanks,

Sebastian

IS will work. AF will work with the 1.4 Convertor, but not with the 2X convertor.

Colin stacks the convertors and gets a decent result, so a single convertor should give good images.

Well, we all know if Colin can do it, it certainly doesn't mean we can do it! But thanks for the info Wietse!  Big grin

You can use the 2x converter with the 300 f4 no problem, if your not using a 1 series camera then you will have to manually focus. That combination has such a shallow depth of field it's difficult at first but once you get the hang of how much to rotate the focusing ring it's easy.

I used it for about six months on my 10D and use it now on the 1Dii.
I have loads of images in the database with that combination, if you want to look then click on my profile.

G'day Sebastian
If you don't mind buying second hand then 300F4's a pop up at FM'sall the time for much better prices than that.A bonus is most sellers are reliable and trustworthy being good photags themselves.
They will often post links to show the quality of an individual lenses quality which is always good as you can see what you will get.
Well worth thinking about and i think there are two 300F4's there at the moment.

Hi Sebastian
Just go to the buy and sell pages in the forums at Fred Miranda website which is
http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/board/10
You will find many bargains and also a great place to pick up great condition used gear.
Its a great place to buy and sell with many people selling there having excellent reputations in the selling dept.In almost every case you will be better off than buying ebay because almost everyone knows the good sellers and gives them a solid plug and you will know exactly what you are getting.
Its also the best photo website i have ever seen and will show you exactly what you and your gear are truly capable of.
Darren

Sebastian !

Be carefull with all prices from B&H, I booked all me lenses that I'm getting on Friday, which incedently one of them is also the 300mm f4 LIS.
B&H add 8.625% sales tax to all their prices! Tis is not a VAT and therefor cannot be claimed back. I got the e-mail from B&H stating this.

I will send you an e-mail if you want and let you know how I get on with the 300mm if you want me to. I'm also getting the 70-200mm f2.8 LIS and 1.4 converter.

Take care

Fergul  Big thumbs up

Darren,
Thanks a lot for the tip! I will check it out!

Fergul,
Man, you really went all out, didn't you? Big grin Please do send the email! I would be interested, and also let me know how you find the lenses (specifically the 70-200 with converter vs 300)!

Thanks,

Sebastian

Sebastian!

Yeh I know, the Credit card is going to hurt a lot when I get back.
Bloody expensive hobby this is. I can't wait to get the lenses though!
As far as I know the 300 would be better than the 200 with the converter. I'm getting the converter primarily for the 300 to give me the 400mm I need as opposed to the 100-400mm LIS. Any views on the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG EX?

Talk to you soon,

Fergul
