Spotting Locations At SFO?

Wed Feb 02, 2005 8:53 pm

I will be taking a trip out to the west coast and was curious to know if there are any decent spots at SFO. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Victor

The Bayfront park off Millbrae Ave. is about the best spot there is. However, remember that if you are going to take pictures, that the heat haze at SFO can get quite annoying after early morning...it may not look like it, but when you review your pictures you'll quickly realize what I mean...even if it's a cold day!

I was over at Bayfront Park this past Saturday and Sunday taking photos and didn't have any problem whatsoever. But I was in the area of Marriott's parking lot, though.

Clickhappy,
This is very untrue. I have known no one to be kicked out of there, and I live close to SFO itself. Police will often walk through the park with dogs and just give a friendly wave.

i'm headed to SFO in april  Smile i'm staying at the Doubletree Hotel SFO Airport and i'm wondering if the Bayfront spotting area and Coyote Point are in that general area and close to the hotel? i'll be jumping off UA870 and straight into spotting.

Coyote Pt. is really not close to the hotels that consider themselves "airport" hotels. Also, Coyote Pt. costs some money (I believe $5) to get into, but it can be worth it if the day is good and you can make the drive.

While the Doubletree is close to Bayfront, it's not a desireable walking distance. However, being you are from afar, you may enjoy the semi long walk along the shore to the park.

i don't mind a walk, i'll have a hire car so it won't be to much of a hassle though, just interested to know exactly how close they are.

I'm heading to SFO for a long weekend in a few weeks. I assume my wife will want us to stay somewhere in one of the touristy areas in or near downtown. How will I get to these spotting locations? Is it really far?

Where can I take shots like that infamous parallel approach shot with the Lufthansa 744 that looks like its touching the 757?

I think the day that I am planning to spend spotting is Saturday, February 19. Anyone else gonna be around that would like to meet up?

Jakbar,
Places that you specify will require you to take a cab or BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). It's a good 20 min. drive to the city from the airport, and BART is about the same, though probably a cheaper bet. You can take BART straight up to the international terminal at the airport.

The infamous shot that you speak of was taken at Bayfront park, with planes landing on the 28's.

I'll consider coming out and meeting you if you'd like a guide to be around.

Hope this helps!  Smile

Xpfg...

Thanks...I'd love to meet up for some photography when I'm out there. It's always more fun when there are other people to talk to, especially when you're at an airport you've never been to before.

Send me an e-mail through my profile and we can talk more. Thanks!

Police will not have an issue. In fact you will find the K9 officer letting its dog out to take a poop. I was there last Sunday and the police officer said hi twice while letting his dog do the dirty. It's a great spot that offers a great grass area (where I set a blanket out for the gf) while still offering a great view. Bird spotters will also be seen b/c of the large populations of birds that gather at the shore line between the park and 1R.

Spent Sunday from 10AM to 5:30PM there. Great sun and a whole lot of people!

Have fun!

Thanks again.

Hello,

You do not need any ladders at bayshore park. The bay water restricts us to walk to the airport and so there is no fence between RWY and the park.

Try to plan your trip during high tide if you can. Otherwise you will get mud in the foreground of all of your photos. Last time I looked at Richards site he has the tide schedule in there: http://flygga.tripod.com

A little on the cost from the airport Fishermans wharf, by taxi it cost me about $55 US one way. So not cheap. I have no idea what BART is though. It is cheaper to rent a car at your hotel for the day then it would be to go back and forth in a taxi and that is a convertable. $100 a day for a convertable a lot less for basic transportation though

i got myself a convertible in LA in december for $38 a day, the priceline link i gave also has car rental, you can get a cheap economy car for about $16USD a day via that link.

looks like the tide will be out just after i arrive in SFO  Smile

I'm going to SFO in the beginning of March, stay on Marriott. And get the chance to fly UA B777. Can't be better huh?
