Printing Problems At Costco, Walmart?

Mon Feb 07, 2005 2:33 am

Wondering if anyone else is having the same problems I am lately.

Basically I have been taking my photos on airliners.net to costco for the past year or so to get 11x14s and they have been great until recently. It seems that they are now blowing out the highlights big time and the stuff is usually way overexposed.

They tell me about this drycreekphoto.com to download all this stuff that is pretty far beyond my computer skills. I would really rather not download all this extra stuff to my computer nor do I know what I need to download anyway as they didn't seem very helpful.

I know the colors I am uploading to airliners.net are pretty much right on so I don't understand why I cant take that into their lab and get those results?

Anyone else having this problem? Anyone else know where you can get 11x14" prints for around $3?

-frustrated!

I picked a couple up yesterday. NO PROBS here! Is your monitor calibrated?

It's the same as it has always been when I used to get great prints. My monitor shows photos the same as the other monitors we have so it can't be that. They all look great.

Some of the photos didn't even require any photoshop work other than a crop to 11x14 and a click of sharpening. I just don't see how that can change the colors/contrast when the photo comes pretty much straight out of the 300D.

dude, Ofoto.com. great stuff, all you do is register then upload. Once you've done that, you can order prints from wallet size all the way up to 20x30. I have this beauty right now hanging on my dorm wall in 20x30.

Looks pretty good, do they come all bent up and stuff after surviving the mail? What kind of packaging do they use for shipping? Also have you had any problems with them adjusting the colors/contrast on the photo after you send it to them or does it look pretty much just like what you upload to airliners.net?

I haven't ever had any problems with color/contrast issues with Ofoto, and the packaging is very nice, for smaller sized prints it comes in a hard plastic/cardboard envelope which is very stiff, and for larger prints like my 20x30s it comes in a cardboard tube sealed at both ends.

I think I will give it a shot, Ive had it with costco and walmart. I cant believe I actually gave them money for the last batch they printed.

If you go with regular mail how long did it take from the time you placed the order till they arrived at the door?

Yeah I went ahead and did a test of the online photo printing companies. Ofoto vs. Shutterfly. Ofoto clearly won. It seemed they sharpened the photos even a little bit more than I had, but not so much that it was overwhelming. It just looked crisper than with Shutterfly. The one exception was with a shot of Rocky Mountain National Park, where a mountain skyline came back looking like the top had a halo because Ofoto over sharpened it. Overall though, i would say Ofoto wins.

From what I hear, however, the best printing company on the net is www.mpix.com. They print in sizes native to a DSLR, which is very nice, instead of making you resize to a 4:3 ratio at larger sizes. Their per print price is also a bit cheaper than ofoto in most cases. The only difference is that their photos cost $4.99 to ship, where as Ofoto/Shutterfly's shipping is around $1.99.

Thanks Eric. I was just looking for someone who could print 30X20 relatively cheap.

Well I just ordered some photos from ofoto so we shall see how they turn out. Kinda annoys me that they sharpen your photos more. I wish I could find a place that would print what I send them and not adjust anything.

I have since gone back and checked my photos on my current monitor, another monitor and even my laptop and they are fine, I am convinced that the problem is in costco's and walmart's printers now. They used to turn out perfectly but now they seem to completely blow out all the highlights and overexpose the photo.

Is there any reason for me to think these will come out of their printer looking different than they appear here?

Tim don't worry about Ofoto. The photo's will come out looking good, at least in my experience. I'm not sure if they sharpened them or what, but their photos definetely looked sharper than Shutterfly, yet not oversharpened.

Ok cool, I am totally new to this stuff and have been away from reality for the past 6 months so I guess it will take some trial and error in the printing process. It's just frustrating and can be rather expensive in that trial and error process.

That's what photography is all about though, "trial and error".

Hey, any of you Denver guys fly or working on your private at all? I'm looking for a reason to go flying.

Yeah, I have all my ratings now. Flight Instructor, Instrument Instructor and Multi Engine Instructor.

I am just looking for people to fly with and have some fun really until I can lock down a full time CFI job in the area which is proving tough to do.
