Which Alpine Airport Is This?

Mon Mar 07, 2005 5:41 pm

Can anyone help me to identify this airport?
I took the picture while flying with Ryanair from Pisa to Prestwick. The view is facing East. I'm guessing it must be in the Italian,French,Swiss border area.Any help greatly appreciated.

Could it be Innsbruck perhaps?

innsbrucks probibly the default answer, it does kinda look like it with the mountins on either side, but i dont see the river going along the end of the runway, or the town more importantly... so im stuck

As we flew over it I thought "That's Innsbruk" but when I looked at the map later I reckoned our route should be miles away from Innsbruk. Also I don't think Innsbruk has a lake nearby, does it.

it should be the old airport of Brienz in the east of the lake brienz (brienzersee). on the top of your picture you see the lake of thun (thunersee). between the two lakes is Interlaken. there is also an old airport. now, there is the Mistery Park from Erich von Däniken.

hope this helps

Just a suggestion - I think it may be Lugano.

Hi,
i dont´think it´s Brienz, since he said the view is facing east.
This is a hard one to find out.

It´s not:

LSGS
LSZW
LSMI
LSMM
LSZA
LSMA
LSME
LSMD

...in my opinion.

Just got back from work to find that while I have been out earning a living (?) lots of you have been busy trying to work out which airport I photographed.
Thanks to you all!
I've taken out the old atlas and have to say that it sure looks like Meiringen!
Cheers

Certainly looks like the area. Right click a couple of times to zoom out and show the lake.

Left Click once near where it says Brienzwiler and you can see the airport.

From..... http://www.skyguide.ch/en/Tools/Contact/

Meiringen
Aerodrome
3857 Unterbach

033 972 67 01
033 971 51 01

The topography at Meiringen makes it the most challenging military airport in Switzerland's mountains. Skyguide is in charge of approach and apron control.
