Request For Opinion, Crop Or Not To Crop

Wed Mar 09, 2005 6:31 am

As I have now cleared up the images in my upload que, albeit with four tries for the latest one, the two F-16s landing, I wonder if I could have some opinion on whether to crop or not to crop these images. I will link to them both cropped and not.

Personally I like the things in front of both planes, both the little instrument shed on the F-4E photo, and the shed in the DC-8 photo.
I would really appreciate some opinions. I might possibly just go ahead and see if the screeners might think like me, or if they reject as Badcentered, the images with the things in front of the real subjects.

Here is the F-4E shot.
F-4E smoking tires not cropped
and

And here the DC-8
DC-8-62F at Lyon not cropped
and
DC-8-62F at Lyon cropped

I am probably trying to put myself inside the heads of the screeners, but are we not all?

Baldur..

Sorry if I don't fill what you expect because I'm not screener but if my opinion counts I definitely prefer the cropped ones..

PD: Happy as well to see Gary back in the forum ( I had the sense he was lost from this aviation photography forum )...

The color balance on the first picture looks wrong. The sky and the clouds are mostly green or cyan on my monitor. The sky in the second picture is blue.

I agree. The cropped versions look better. But I know the feeling. It's not always fun to leave out details that are interesting to oneself, but which others are less interested in.

Nice to see you back btw Gary, what have you been up to lately?  Smile

Thank you all guys. I see that the vote is against me, which I sort of expected.  sigh

I will upload these cropped ones and see how they do.

I have tried to correct this via Hue/saturation menu.

Fergul. I was told at the time that they were what was left of the original arresting gear, before they installed the hydraulic piston gear. Just old stuff lying around, but still doing something for the photo (to my mind).

And Gary, thank you for the kind comments. Of course as you all know, one never shows the stuff that is not to ones own liking. So you are seeing some of my best stuff from the old days, while I am still getting to grips with my Canon EOS 10D.

Thank you all for your input. It was really with tongue in cheek that I submitted this thread, but to my mind that is what this forum is about, getting and giving advice/opinions from/to your fellow photographers and Anet fans.

Hope you see these in about a weeks time, after they (hopefully) get accepted.

By the way the DC-8 was taken at Liege, Belgium, not Lyon, France

Cheers
Baldur
