First Submission To Airliners.net, Any Advice?

Fri Mar 11, 2005 1:29 pm

Hi all, I just bought a D300 today and went to RSW to try things out, and hopefully get the LTU A333. I was lucky and I did and now I would like to submit this photo, any suggestions on what to do to it?

Change the aspect ratio, first of all. A panorama shaped picture like that will probably get rejected.

For starters, I don't think that crop will ever get through. The aspect ratio needs to be reasonably close to 3:2 or 4:3. Looks like you are cropping out a fence. Need to shoot over or through it in the future, if possible.

Can you post an original w/o edits or credits?

Thanks,

Matt

I havent got it hosted anywhere or i would.

In regards to the fence comment; it was over a fence but with a ditch in the way as well.

Email it to me please (littlefart9111@yahoo.com) I am no photoshop wiz but I'll try to see if I can help it become a.net quality. I have 3 photos in the DB and have taken some great advice from the many great photographers on this site.

Thanks,

Matt

OMG! The ditch is amazing. It shows the reflection of the a/c as it taxis by. I am pretty sure the shot is level based on the white posts in the back ground but at the worst it might need a slight rotation to the right. I don't know if the street is an issue but the screeners will have to deal with it. (JK) I did my best but am not too sure about the tail of the a/c. I did sharpen one but I liked what the camera produced better. Here is what I did to your shot. Took the original, cropped it by 1024x768. Messed with the levels didnt like that and did a slight sharpening. If other, better photoshop foke, feel they wish to take a whack at it I'll forward the original to ya! IDK about the nose of the a/c, looks soft but if I bump it up in the USM it makes the tail look wayyyyyy jaggy!

Thanks,

Matt

APFPilot1985, your edit looks fine, except for the aspect ratio and size. It will get rejected for badsize as it is, so you should delete it from the queue to save the screeners time.

Crop closer to the nose and tail, and make the aspect ratio 3:2 (or possibly 4:3), as LeanOfPeak said. With the quality of that shot, you should be able to make it 1200 px. wide (as I prefer to do when I can), but 1024 is pretty much the standard.

Good work for your first upload, just fix the size issue and you're on your way!

UA777222, your link doesn't work... unless you give us your photobucket password! ziplip

Reid,
I have been to the spot you have shot from before. My advice is to get to a high spot on the road where you can get over the fence or stand on the trunk of the car. RSW is a very underexposed airport on this website and needs every shot it can get. I hope to add my view personally when I pass through on Monday. Here are a few shots from my friend who was with me:

Notice only one is on airliners. I will do what I can to get some around here. Best of luck. -TJ

Sorry about that,

Here is a VERY big picture of it. Photobucket cant seem to get the size down unless cropped. Not too sure how this will turn out;

Thanks,

Matt

Wow, I like the look of those reflections... why ever did you crop them out in the first place? If you can go there sometime when the water's still, you'll be able to get some killer reflection shots!

TJ- I agree, Although i live in naples, as you can tell by my username, i was more excited to go up to RSW and shoot the "big metal", I was really happy with finding that spot and the Port Authority Police were great, waving to me multiple times.

NOOOOOO!!!!!!! Leave the crop size I made for you! You need to have it at a better aspect. I made it so that it's uploadable. One steap away! I will e-mail that copy to you so all you have to do is upload it!

Thanks,

Matt

Hey Reid,
When you crop it, use a 4:3 aspect ratio so the size you get is 1024x768, if you think you can get away otherwise use 1024x700 or 1024x600. The further you venture away from 768 pixels tall, the tougher it is going to be to get your shots accepted.

Regarding the airport, I hope when the new terminal opens up that the current place you shoot from will remain, or at least be replaced with something equal or greater. I had to stop and chat with the port authority police first to make sure they were okay with me being there. After I chatted with them, they were happy to see us around. Keep up the good work. -TJ
