4 Questions :-)

Wed Mar 16, 2005 7:18 pm

1) When does "bad common" come into effect for a rejection. Is it 50 aircraft in the DB or 100 , 150 etc etc etc. I have asked this a couple of times but it always seems to meet a wall of silence.

2) What is a sharper lens combo. A straight 400 mm L IS USM F/5.6 or a 300 mm L IS USM F/4.0 + 1.4 x II extender.

3) What is sharper. A 70-200 L IS USM F/2.8+1.4 x II extender. Or a 300 mm L IS USM.

4) Has anyone tried a 400 mm L IS USM F/5.6 with a 1.4 x II extender for contrail photo's. Do they come out soft due to the large focal length...

Cheers all.

Simon 'Torquemada' Curtis,

1) I think it's just a vague guideline. I've only had a rejection for this where there were over 100 entries for the particular aircraft (a certain BMI A330), and I thought it was just the screener's way of saying "Look, very nice, but there's loads, so I'm not accepting it." It's pretty fair I think, and not nearly as painful as quality related reasons.

3) I'd guess a prime should always be sharper than a zoom with a TC, even if that zoom is a 2.8 70-200.

Cheers

Quoting LHRSIMON (Thread starter):
A straight 400 mm L IS USM F/5.6

I do not think that exists?

Normally a prime is sharper than a zoom with an extender.

So am i correct in thinking that a prime with a converter will always be sharper than a zoom with a converter.

Simon it does but as far as I'm aware its an f2.8. There is a 400mm f5.6 L but not with IS. The IS version is a f2.8.

Simon,
that one does not have IS.
There is also the 400mm 4.0 DO IS.

Its over $6000 at B&H, the one you're looking at Simon is about $1100 some difference alright.

Good luck

PS As far as I know, generally a fixed 400mm is better that a zoom at 400mm.

As JM has stated, there is the Canon 400mm L f4 IS DO lens, I've shot with this lens and if finances allowed I would get one. This is the lens of choice for day long shooting, very lightweight and sharp.

Does that lens hood include gold plating as well? $600 (less one cent) for a piece of plastic sounds like a very bad deal to me...

I purchased this lens (EF400mm f2.8 LU/2 prime) last month. I bought it at Focus on Imaging at the NEC, UK.

I bought the lens at a bargain price  cloudnine  .....and I got the 2xII extender free and a heavy discount on the manfrotto 458B Neotec tripod, the 322RC head and the Lowepro Pro Trekker AW II!

The lens is amazing!!!!!!!

See it at MAN at http://www.pbase.com/kminter/galleries

Definitely need to start working out. This thing ways a ton! (well about 6kg actually).

It has to be used with a monopod in most cases.

The cost was just over £5.6K for the lot mentioned above!!!!!  drunk
