What is the usual runway configuration at LGA?

to be honest, there is no "usual" runway configuration at LGA. everything can vary from day to day. they try to use 22 for arrivals and 13 for departures as much as possible, but that doesn't always work out for them. everything depends on the winds. now, keep in mind that if they are flying one pattern in the morning they may change it in the evening for noise abatement.

as for the shot above you need to be "in" with a certain photog to go there. i've been trying for some time to get him to take me there, no luck yet.  Sad c'mon phil!

Thanks for the info, Cancidas, I was under the impression that Mr. Derner wants to keep some things secret, it seems you just confirmed it.

No, not the case. I've already taken several people to suchlocations already.

The problems is that you need several variables in your favor. Rwy 31 landings, good weather, low tide and you only have a gap of about an hour until the sun moves too far south to get the shot. Not to mention it's a dangerous area.

If it was that easy to get those shots, I'd have done it a lot more times myself since last May, don't you think?

Cancidas has just not been able to come meet up with me at 6:30AM to do it. :-p

My above instructions are your best bet for settings something up with all the local guys. I don't think I'll be available.

Many thanks for your explanations, Phil.

I am just checking the weather report and it seems it is gonna rain Monday morning...

Thanks again to everybody.

I am currently up here in the big apple and I am curious about the current photography situation inside LGA. I recall some time ago hearing about somebody that got in trouble for taking shots inside the terminal. I fly out tomorrow (March 20) and I wanted to get a few shots before I left. Where is the best location for shooting and what kind of focal length will I need? Thanks for any help!

Forecasts speak of rain tomorrow (3/20), so it's your call. Winds'll be from the East, so nothing spectacular will probably be happening at LGA and JFK will opt for the 31s.

Javi, I would stay inside unless you'd be up for dealing with wet and miserable weather.

Tim, it all depends what airline you're flying out with. There should be photo ops from all three terminals, but only the Central Terminal Building offers these before security. There are two good locations--one by Pier D (American) and one by Pier A (Continetnal, et al). There will be huge windows and rocking chairs, but if you go up the escalator that's righ there, you'll be above all the action. Keep in mind that you'd be behind a window and it'll be raining.

If you plan on being there for any length of time, pick up one of the courtesy phones and dial the extension for the Port Authority Police Department. Tell them that you're an aviation enthusiast and just want to let them know you'd be taking photos of aircraft from 'the windows'. They may send a cop or to to get your name or check your ID, but other than that, you should be in the clear.

Have fun,
Brian

Thanks for the info Brian. I am flying out on AA tomorrow and I'll have to check out those locations. What focal length do you need from 'the windows' and from Pier D? Maybe luck will shine through tomorrow and it won't rain.

Any focal length should work. 50-400mm encompasses most shots from those locations, you can definitely try to go wider or closer if your equipment allows you to do so. What will you be shooting with?

I'll be shooting with a 17-40 (might be too wide) and a 70-200 with a 2x converter if needed. Now the meteorologists are talking about snow as well. We'll have to see how that works out.

Yes, weather looks bad. Count me out. If the sun pokes out I will just drive to ISP or FRG and try to catch something.

Speaking of JFK/LGA photography...I was at JFK yesterday at the Costco parking lot, shooting the normal arrivals. To my surprise (and excitement), ATC changed the arrivals from 31R to 22L! So I jumped back into my car and I was off to Rosedale. Went down Brookville Blvd., and went around to a few residential streets, and over to the baseball field across from Brookville Park. Very nice day!

Finally it was a rainy and grey day and I did not even try, but I am gonna be again at New York with fellow A.netter Ander Aguirre next Friday, I hope the weather is better this time.

Is anyone going to the airport that day?

Regards
