Thanks a lot guys,

It was my first day in St. Marrten. I had just gotten a few beach shots when I saw this 757 heading out to the other end of the runway. I know Reverse departures don't happen that often. Seeing this plane coming right at you was a bit of a rush I had not experienced anything like that. And then that really late rotation was incredible combined with the excellent light.

I did see two other 27 departures, but nothing like this one.

There must have a few beers put down at the Sunset Beach bar when this happened?!

The only departure I witnessed when I was there was a Transat A300 and he was 500 feet over the beach by the time he passed overhead. Maybe this guy was just trying to please the crowd!!

Regards

John

Nice shot!

Here's what the crew may have been doing when in the fine art of "fence-hopping. U.S. Airways like the beach candy and 27 is the best way to see it.

Hey John!

Actually I think he's hanging on to something by the window.
There are possibilities though, and WINAIR and Continental have helped me with a few setups in the past on 27. Those dudes love to see their faces on the net.
Hope you and yours have had a great Easter!

How often do the "reverse departures" happen ?
Would like to have an idea for planning a trip to SXM next year, is there a particular time of year that this is more likely to happen.
It would be good to get more variety of shots than just over the beach, not that I am complaning about the beach shots but 2 days out of 7 with reverse departures would be nice to give the photographs variety.
My plan for when I do get the chance to go is 3 days on Maho beach, a day midway along the runway at the beach that runs along the runway, and a day up on the hill taking shots of departures almost head on.

A couple of other questions about the hill if I may.
How do I get to the hill, by car, public transport, walking?
How long would it take from the resort of Maho beach?

Flying may not be all plain sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price.

Hey BSU 747,

When the wind in below 10 knots the pilot can ask for 27 depending on the incoming traffic. You see them most during lulls in traffic and late in the day.
If you have a scanner it helps to determine the runway.
A 757 can pick up about 10 minutes using 27 to SJU.

I have never seen a jet landing on 27 but the island hoppers do it a lot (STOL)

It would take a long page to answer your other questions. Go down there and you'll see for yourself. It's always best to rent a car in SXM.

Have a fun trip!

Wow, the skipper really looks like he's staring at you Denis!

Thanks for your goodwill big guy and of course, the same Easter greetings are coming back across the Atlantic to you and yours in Florida.

Regards

John

Eric,

What a fantastic shot!
I wasn't lucky enough to get any 27 departures when I was there. Hope to see some more interesting stuff from SXM.

Cheers,
Kaz

Hey!

This geezer was late on those 27 shots because I fell asleep at the bar. Through the haze I did spot Tony and friend down the fence taking those fab 27 shots.
By the time I stumbled down there the sun was already setting but Tony was still clicking....so was I and this is my very best of the trip. That's him and his bud stretching and stealing the last light of the day.
What A WEEK!

Denis,

I didnt catch one 27 departure. And, I don't blame you for falling asleep; the sun really wipes you out down there!

Chris
There is a fine line between a picture and a photo. The latter seems to be disappearing.

Denis,

You're still in SXM?! Wow that's the life my friend.
Have a couple beers for me with the ladies at the Sunset Beach Bar.

Cheers,
Kaz
