Anybody Got Coolscan III Or IV Examples?

Sun Apr 03, 2005 8:57 am

These things appear to be going for fairly cheap on ebay, and my PrimeFilm scanner that served me well for 3 years appears to have finally shit the bed. Anybody have some quality examples of scans from these scanners? if you could show me, that'd be great. Coolscan III (LS-30) scans would do, but I'd prefer seeing some scans from the Coolscan IV (LS-40).

Thanks guys.  Smile

Cullen
All of my black and white and anything before August 2004 is on a Coolscan III that I got cheaply off e-bay. The last slides I did are at DCA and I have included a few. The III does not come equipped for Windows XP but the drivers can be downloaded from Nikon and it seems to work flawlessly.

Here are 3 scans from Coolscan IV. I love that scanner. Pictures were taken in 1998/99/00 that time I was using pretty cheap lens on Canon and Nikon bodies. You can see that Coolscan is working magic.

Rafal, are you still shooting slides and using that scanner or have you gone digital?

Cullen,

I have switched to D100 in December 2003. Those scans are not from slides, they are from negatives. I have around 15K negatives that needs to be scanned  Smile Whenever I have opportunity I'm scanning pictures already in the database and I'm reuploading them to a.net.

Ah, alright. In your opinion do you think it's still possible to get photos accepted here if I still shoot film? One thing that hasn't changed about me is I'm still a stubborn ass when it comes to switching from film to digital  Wink nothing against you digital guys, I just love my film that's all  Wink

My Sabena picture was accepted few months ago. Friend of mine is scanning slides and they are accepted here.

Sweet, I can't wait to get back into this again. 3 years without it is too long...

There is little doubt about it, it is a lot more difficult to get scanned slides taken recently accepted on the database. But it can be done.
I've now gone over to digital and love it, but still have slides and negatives to scan. I am trying to mix them for uploading.

I use a Coolscan V which I believe is not much different in terms of quality than the earlier models. I scan K64 and Fujichrome 100 slides and improve the images using Focusmagic and Photoshop Elements. Most of my submitted shots have been accepted, but then most of these are from the "pre-digital age".

The screeners would be in the best position to advise on whether scanned rather than digital shots of current subjects still stand a good chance of being accepted.

The Coolscan IV that I own is topnotch. I mostly scan old rare subjects but have absolutely no problem getting common subjects accepted. The main challenge with editing slidescans is colormanagement.

As for the older scans, they come out just perfect as well, but that's because the slides are perfect as well Wink

Quality is largely determined by the quality of the originals and to a lesser degree by scanning/editing techniques. I have found Kodachrome pretty easy to scan, contrary to what some other people have said. Especially K25 scans like a dream. Only drawback to kodachrome is that ICE doesn't work and you can spend a lot of time cloning out dust.

Getting the Coolscan III to work with XP was tricky for me. I had to install a two-generations old copy of AIC to get it working.

Thanks guys. I'm going to give my Primefilm a couple more tries, and if it still won't work right, I'm definitely getting a Coolscan.

Most of my A'net pictures are Fuji Sensia slides that were scanned with a Coolscan IV: http://www.airliners.net/search/phot...%20Vercruijsse&distinct_entry=true

I don't own a Nikon scanner so can't comment on that aspect of the topic but I can say yes on the above. I still upload some of my Kodachrome scans (scanned with an Acer 2720s) and they get accepted.

Nice scans...now the way you worded that leads me to believe you, too, have gone digital - which for me would be hard to believe, as I remember you being the ultimate, die-hard, will-never-shoot-anything-except-K64 guy Big grin

Thanks! When I said "will-never-shoot-anything-except-K64" that was meant towards film. Meaning, I will only shoot Kodachrome and not Fuji or other slide film. I never had anything against digital. Well, except for converting to full-time digitial. My F5 will continue to burn loads of K64 so don't worry  Smile But yes, my bag now includes a D70. I'm still the die-hard slide shooter and always will be, at least until they no longer sell slide film.

How's the D70? My dad is looking to get one to replace his N6006 (which I might inheret, unlikely though as I'm a Pentax man, and I've used his camera on occasion and am not all that crazy about it) - and he's looking for reviews.

Shoot me an email sometime about the D70 - my dad would appreciate any help in deciding.

Good to hear you're still shooting slides - I myself don't intend to go digital until, like you said, slide film is no longer sold - and who knows, that day may never come. We're still different in that I love Fuji films though  Wink particularly the provia F series - that stuff is simply awesome in my book.

The D70 is simply awesome. Have it about a year now and have been very happy with the purchase. If your Dad decides to go with the D70 he'll have no regrets....it's a solid performer. Rumor has it a D50 will be offered in the coming months and maybe a D70s but can't confirm.

I agree Provia F is awesome but just not the right slide film for my needs at the moment. But trust me, if Kodachrome is discontinued I'll be a fellow Provia 100F user myself.
