Experiences With Canon 50mm F/1.8 EF II Lens?

Fri Apr 08, 2005 7:42 am

Hello everyone. I do alot of photography at concerts, and so I am looking for a fast lens that won't break the bank. However, I would also like a lens that I could put to some use aviation wise; ramp shots, etc. I stumbled upon this lens:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...list&A=details&Q=&sku=12142&is=USA

It's getting rave reviews from the people at FredMiranda, especially for the price. ($74.95) Wow!

http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/s...php?product=30&sort=7&cat=2&page=1

I think I am going to get it, but I thought I would ask here first to see if anyone has any experience with it or reccomendations?

Thanks!
Kyle Matson

Cheap, light, sharp, small... did I say cheap?

A bit soft wide open, but stop it down a bit and it's good.

I don't know if you will be able to answer this, but how would you compare it from like f/10-20 with the 18-55 EF-S @ 50mm?

Thanks!

Haven't used the 18-55 but at 2.8 it's sharper than my 28-105 3.5-4.5 wide open.

Get the F1.4 version, it has USM and is much sharper at F1.8! The build quality is superior too. While i dont use it all that much i find it a great addition to my kit bag!

That's really tempting, especially with the USM, but I don't think I want to spend $300. I just to some low light photography for my friends band, so I was looking to pick up something cheap, as I'm not being paid for it.

I don't use mine much either as I find it a bit too long for what I want to use it for. However if I did, I'd probably get the 1.4 for the USM and nicer bokeh.
Wasn't really after a 50 but I picked it up because it was so cheap..

About build quality: if it brakes, a new one is cheap Big grin

Hi

I just got one last week... and I'm getting married to it.

The results I'm getting are absolutely stunning, crisp and full of detail.
It's very sharp from 2.8 onwards (1.8 is soft, 2 is acceptable), gives crisp details and colorful and contrasty photos... Excelent for portraits and low light situations... and it is very good value for money. Don't worry about build quality, ok so it has a plastic body but it is resistant and makes for a very lightweight lens.

AF is OK, not to USM standards, but focus faster than the 18-55 EF-S lens. And it is much, much more sharper than the kit lens.

I don't believe USM and the extra stop you get with the 1.4 justify the price difference. Now I can't wait for July and the FAO ramp visit

Feel free to email me if you need aditional info.
Regards
Luis

I have been looking at this lens also. I hear the and have seen that the f/1.4 is a hell of a lot better, but there again it costs a lot more than the f/1.8 II.

For the price though, you can't argue. As Mr Sharps said, it's a nice addition to the kit bag!

I have the lens and recently used it extensively for night photography and low light indoors as well. I must say that I'm impressed with it as it does a great job. I still haven't used it for aviation but I will do soon.

You really should not edit the photos if you are trying to do a good comparison. I suggest just converting the raw files and taking a 100% crop from the center and the corner of the frame so that people can compare sharpness/contrast and color rendition.

When i get round to it i have been meaning to do some comparison's of my lenses. If my current purchase's come through then i will have a few more bits and pieces to compare.

I'll post it when they are done.

Yeah, I didn't do this comparison the smartest, but it took sooo long I just don't feel like doing it over again.  Sad

Hehe, no worries. Was just giving some tips for the future, i know how tiresome and how much of a pain it is to conduct lens tests!

Too much mm's for Cabin (I guess). It would suit instrument close ups in the Cockpit. Also for wing views, it also might be too much mm's.
