Dllas-Ft. Worth Photo Shoot - May 10-15

Sun Apr 17, 2005 8:55 am

Greetings,

I'll be visiting Dallas that week (Need to take care of some paperwork at NAS Ft. Worth JRB) and while i'm there, I plan on doing a photo session at DFW with my trusty Nikon D100. I'll be going whenever the weather is nice no matter what day. However, if the weather is nice on May 14, a Saturday, I'll be going that day hopefully to shoot and meet some of the locals. Some ideals I'll be at is Founders Plaza and the LH Cargo area, hopefully find me a stepladder in the area. Ryan Umphrey, if you read this, looking forward to meet you since last year you were out of town.

Regards,

Kevin

I wonder how they react to ladders at LH cargo. When I was there, I used the step of my truck to stand on to shoot over the fence. I almost wished I had a ladder to get on top of the truck - 13'6" + my ~6ft. No need for one at Founders. Good Luck!

Go3Team,

The last time shooting from LH Cargo last year was no problem with me even using a 3ft. stepladder. DFW is one of the airport friendly environment for photographers, rarely any incidents perhaps a few ocassions with cops on patrol with a friendly ID check. No worries. My next car would be a truck,....helluva easy to get on and stand up while shooting over fences.

I need to get down there on a good day. I was there last year sometime, and the remnants of a tropical storm was just blowing thru, and still got 2 photos accepted. My company didn't give me any free time when I was there last week.  Sad

I would be cautious with a ladder. I am aware of an incident that happened lately involving one, and it was a small 3-step ladder. Probably wise to stay in your car until the proper moment, then use the ladder quickly. BTW, it occurred at the LH cargo lot.

Tim if you're talking about Jay-I think Jay got a little testy with the officers and chewed them out. I don't think GoCaps would do that.

No, Ryan, it was another circumstance. One of the guys in a yellow pickup called the cops because he had observed the guy on a ladder. There is that post-9/11 rule about ladders near fences. I think a photographer can avoid making a scene simply by being smart about things.

Well, perhaps that day I'm there, it won't be a problem. Last year, it was no problem at the LH Cargo using a 3 ft. ladder. As for chewing out a cop is a no no for me. Even tho I have chewed out people in the high ranking areas at work and really, it doesn't work. So, what's the point trying to argue with a disgruntled cop. Obvious the situation would be far worse. Sorry Sleekjet, if the weather is in the 80s or even 90s, there is no way I'll stay in the car til someone comes. I don't do that becuase I've missed that special opportunity once and I will not do it again. Too risky. I rather have airport police question me, check my military ID and find that I'm an american citizen, a taxpayer, and not some illegal immigrant from the Middle East. Even if I have to, I'll call airport ops and airport authorities and let them know my photo ops. Thanks for the replies!

I've used the LH cargo lot (last Friday, as a matter of fact), and it went pretty well. Got some nice shots - but had a bit of heat haze to deal with. If I we can all go together, I've got the credentials and badges to keep the cops from messing with us - but I still wouldn't be bringing any ladders along!

Andrew-DFW ALWAYS has heat haze.

Those guys in the yellow trucks are a bunch of jerks. The AA guys always wave at me, and gives us a heads up if someone is leaving the AA hanger. The yellow fellows are just on a power trip.

Those two words shouldn't be in the same sentence  Wink. I'm glad to hear that DFW is relatively a friendly airport for photographers. I am hoping that I can make it down to those parts in the near future.
