Canon 350D....which Zoom To Buy?

Thu May 12, 2005 4:11 pm

I am planning on asking one of the SAA crew to bring me a 350D from New York, probably from B & H. Now, I would like to get an additional zoom as well, and from my experience with my Minolta X-700 something in the line of 70-300 will meet my needs.

However, on the website http://www.bhphoto.com there are so many derivatives of this zoom that I don't know where to start. They have:

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS Image Stabilizer USM $ 1,099.95
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS Image Stabilizer USM $ 1,149.95
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 EF IS Image Stabilizer USM $ 399.95
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 EF IS Image Stabilizer USM $ 414.95
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III $ 149.95
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III $ 159.95
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM $ 174.95
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM $ 189.95

For each lens there is an "imported" and "USA" derivative, the USA being the more expensive. This is going to be a purely hobby camera so the first two lenses aren't an option based on the price, but what can anyone advise about the others?

ps anyone wanna buy my X-700?  Smile

why not go for a 70-200mm F4/L. Since you already get the added 1.6x due to the sensor size its not that far off and its a nice piece of glass

My original lens is the "Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 EF IS Image Stabilizer USM". This lens was Canon's first IS lens, and I believe justifies the additional cost (I love IS!).

The lens is a reasonable consumer lens. For best results, the aperture has to be stopped down to f8. Wide open, it produces a very soft result.

Pros:
* IS!!!
* Can produce good results when used correctly

Cons:
* Auto focus hunts, often enough to annoy
* Soft when using f4.0 through f8.0

I would also vote for the 70-200 f/4. Compared to some of those other lenses, you might be able to crop into about the equivalent of 250mm and get a better image than with those lenses.

Thanks for the advice, I see there are a couple of 70-200 as well but I can't afford a grand for a lens so the EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM seems to be the one to look at.

There is the f2.8 and the f4. I think he was talking about the f4. That runs around $500.

Thanks,

The 70-200 F4 is a great lens, but - dependant on what and where you shoot - you may find the 200mm limiting. Yes you can crop quite heavily, but that's bad practice. For shooting heavies at most airports I think you'd be okay. It's pretty good all the way down to F4, and is nice and stable due to it's weight.

The 75-300 IS seems like a great lens, and you get a good reach plus IS if that's important to you. Look for Paul Markman, Glenn Stewart, Justin Wood (earlier stuff), and Gary Watt for an idea of what it will do.

this is the one that you want. $569 grey market. The USA one only matters if you want the US warranty.

Why not consider Sigma 70-200 F2.8? You can get it for the price of Canon's F4.0 and the quality is outstanding.
