Photos Like This Not Allowed Anymore? > Badcolor

Mon May 16, 2005 6:28 pm

Hello,

I recently uploaded a contrail photo on which I played with color levels quite a bit.
A screener told me once via msn messenger that he sees no problems in uploading them like that.

Well, it got badcolor:
http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...ig/160305_-2-Emirates777200_15.jpg

I decided to upload it because there are several like this in the DB.

Are photos like this not acceptable anymore in general? I'm just curious because then I won't try sthg like that again even though I prefer it over a "normal" blue sky.

Thanks.

How shots manipulated with that ammount of Level/Curves ever got in the database is beyond me. I would like to see people try that with a regular takeoff or landingshot.

Fergul, thanks but that's not the point.

I'm just curious why mine got rejected, if these photos are still allowed?

I think these are a classic case of Photoshop auto-adjustment.

Mine come out like this too if I apply auto-adjustment, but I know that the sky isn't that dark so I agree that these should be rejected.

I think these shots have a place on Anet, but with the correct colour/contrast balance.

Im with Martin on this never been a fan of these "adjusted" shots, does seem strange that having accepted shots like this they are now being rejected...

It's not auto-adjustment Martin, auto-adj. makes it completely dark, with the aircraft almost not visible anymore.

That's exactly what I would like to know. I know it's a matter of taste, but I prefer these kind of contrail photos over the normal ones.

Crew input and help would be appreciated.

I too am in the camp of liking the nice blue sky shots and not the black ones. To me they are just unnatural! Great if you like them but not for me!

No offence ment at all, i like your shot! Just i prefer the blue skys! hehe

I had never noticed these shots in the data base and am honestly quite astonished that this kind of "generous" manipulation was ever accepted, considering that even fine colour tints at "normal" shots lead to a "badcolour" rejection...

Please, no offence, I am just genuinly surprised!

No offence to anyone with contrail shots.. but I have an issue with them.
This site continually maintains it is a db of aircraft, not a photo gallery.
Indeed to that end, mildly creative or manipulated photos of aircraft are rejected.

What value, apart from an aesthetic one, do contrail shots add to this db?
They certainly do not add to the "record" or history of a particular aircraft.

Don't get me wrong I think some of the contrail shots on this site are awesome, I just don't get the relationship between them and a "db"
Why are they such a feature yet other "artistic" photos are ruthlessly rejected?

Regards

Chris

Hi Florian..

I've started a topic about this problem and you participated too...but no A.net staff did participate..
As Tim says it would be perfect to clarify this 'problem'.

Chris,

What a value, apart from an aesthetic one, do the thousands of sunset / sunrise / silhouette photos have then? Sometimes none! But the value clearly isn't the point, it's about the aesthetics!

So it's with contrails I'd say.

As I said before, everyone has its own taste, I do like em, if you don't of course that's perfectly fine. I just want to get help on why earlier they got in but apparently now not anymore.

As Tim said, they're discussing the issue, so I'd like to wait for their decision without discussing personal tastes any further.

Thanks,
Florian

Florian,
I totally agree but there are so many other instances where aesthetics or any semblance of creativity is rejected. I actually like some of the sunset/rise and contrail photos but have seen many other "creative" photos thrown out on the "this is a database" premise.

I also agree let's see what the crew comes up with..

Its like chalk across an old fashioned black board. Nothing looks like that.

Almost as if we had glowing contrails in the middle of the night.

I was surprised to see similar shots accepted that way in the last year or two.

Doesn't bother me at all, but the trend for all/most other types of shots is total intollerance of any manipulation.

Simon, because I think with normal "blue" sky, it looks boring. It lacks in contrast and just isn't interesting in my opinion. I'd like to get the photo accepted like I linked in the first post above, not in normal blue. If the crew decides not to accept these photos anymore I'll have to agree on that and will keep it for my personal collection.

Manipulation isn't the same always. Talk about filters?

I never actually manipulate photos in a way that does count as manipulation here on anet and upload them. I just point out that these photos have been accepted about 4 months ago, so I thought that's perfectly fine.

Still, I'd like to freeze that discussion now, until the screening crew came to a solution.

Well, I can tell you why one of them was. All you need to do is look below the photo!  Wink

And if some of the screeners and Johan are interested at all in consistency, than if these type of photos are no longer allowed, then all the photos like it in the DB will be removed, right?  Wink

Brian, the difference with the change that affected you was the site was in violation of the terms of service agreed upon to the people hosting Airliners.net. It was change or die, his hands were tied and he had to move quickly.

Royal, I have too much respect for you to let you believe that. You know the real reason the Hooters photos were deleted, and so do I.

But I'm sure we can talk about it on IM in private, cause I know how you guys like to keep the secrets hush hush on here.

Having seen these "manipulated" images appear with some regularity it had left me pondering should the "badmanipulation" rule apply here.

Have a look at this:-

http://www.airliners.net/search/similarity_search.php?photo_id=757888

Obviously it's occuring so some clarification would be great.

If manipulated contrail shots are fine, jury is stil out on that though it seems some screeners even head screeners think they are...
Then is that not a slippery slope A.net may not want to get on?

This EK a340 leaving SYD on a sunny but smoggy morning.... as shot-

http://www.pbase.com/chrisg/image/43476287.jpg

But I like this version..-

http://www.pbase.com/chrisg/image/43476288.jpg

Would that be OK with A.net.. because I like it? I fear not

But what is the difference?

I couldn't agree more. I've been flying for 16 years and the only time I've seen the sky look like that is in photos taken by SR-71 and U-2 pilots at the edge of space. The sky is normally blue, why not depict it that way? If we allow photographers to start manipulating colors to suit their own personal aesthetic we set a dangerous precedent. Where do we draw the line? At what point do these type of photographs stop being photographs and become photo illustrations?

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Rob,

If you had a look at this link:

http://www.airliners.net/search/similarity_search.php?photo_id=757888

Apparently the line should be AFTER the contrail photos, as there are tons of them in the database.

Chris:

Quoting StealthZ (Reply 31):

You're right, it wouldn't be ok, and I respect that you don't agree with the fact that there are dark contrail photos in the database.
I don't came here whining around why others are in the database but mine isn't, I just want to get a fair response wether the photos are still being accepted or not!

People here always talk about screening consistency when complaining about a rejection. I don't want to complain, just a clear definition wether it's acceptable or not to enchange color levels like this regarding contrail photos.

It was acceptable, but is it, still? That's my point and not whining around, the photo won't ever show up here again if the crew does not consider these photos as A.net worthy anymore!
