Sun May 22, 2005 11:55 pm

Please show pics made by different types, even from outside the database  Wink Thanks...

I will go ahead and give you my quick review of my camera... the Panasonic FZ20. I have never used or seen the KM Z3 so I will not try to compare the two... but I was deciding between the same two when I purchased mine. I went with the Panasonic because of the reviews and zoom and looks.

I absolutly love my camera. I used to own a Sony 3.2 MP and there is an amazing difference in quality when I upgraded. What do I like about the FZ20?

- It looks great and feels good/sturdy
- The Leica lens has always been looked upon as an excellent lens
- 12x Optical is amazing. The type of spotting I do, pretty much requires a more powerful zoom
- 5 MP creates great crisp pictures
- IS works great too, especially while using the zoom on a low lit day
- Any review you read highly recommends the camera... one reason I purchased it
- I couldn't afford DSLR and I felt like this was the next closest thing
- Good flash for indoors
- Very versatile
- Large LCD

Feel free to look at my pictures... they were all taken using the FZ20 except for the airport overview picture: http://www.airliners.net/search/phot...hotographersearch=Gabriel%20Molina

Hope this helps,
Gabriel

Oh, I forgot, I have a Z3 as well  Smile

The photos I took with the Z3 can be found here:

November 2004

December 2004

Overall, I was not happy enough with the Z3, which is why I purchased the Panasonic FZ-20. I know it costs more, but it is a much better camera. It is, however, bigger, heavier and uses its own Li-ion batteries though. If I had to choose, I would still choose the FZ20, even though it is more expensive than the Z3. It is the better camera for taking aircraft photos. The Z3 images are a bit too soft - the FZ-20 is much sharper.

Best regards,

Jim

You're going to have plusses and minuses for both obviously. For example, the FZ-20 doesn't have IS. That may play a factor if you're using it at dusk, when shutter speeds flutter around 1/50 or so and at full telephoto position. Then again, the Z5's zoom and the GT lens are not as well regarded as the Leica lenses. I have a KM A2 and I'm perfectly happy with it, here are some shots of different things:

The A200 is its current equivalent. Here is a good review:

Beware of one thing on the Minolta though: leave it on for too long, and the CCD heats up, which will inadvertly create the same effect as cranking ISO, resulting in noisy pictures. Either pick, you're in good hands. If you can, visit a local retailer and play with both of them.

Mine does!  Smile

Both cameras have IS. The Panasonic moves a lens element, while in the Z3 the CCD sits on a little table that has its legs jiggled in time with your shakes. Both systems work well, but I think the Z3 can take a little more shaking. I doubt there is any detectable difference in normal hand-held use.

One plus point in the Z3's favour is that the autofocus is very, very fast, whereas the autofocus on the FZ-20 is fairly normal. It isn't slow, but after using the Z3, it feels it! Even so, the Panasonic still wins for me.

Best regards,

Jim

Sorry I never posted my pics, so no links here, though I have thousands...I use the Panasonic, and I love it, I just love it. Zoom is extremely powerful, the Image stabilising system is easy to use (and it really helps when working at the long end of the zoom range).

Try it for yourself, I can't compare since I never used the Minolta.

Have fun!

btw: Next weekend it's AMS time again for me and my Panasonic  Wink Big grin

It will be no worse than most other 5 MP 'Point-and-Shoots'. If you use ISO 100, have good light and use the correct exposure you should be ok.

When I was looking into buying a Panasonic FZ Camera, this "noise issue" was never even mentioned in any of the reviews I read (and I read loads I guess from Professional users and other users).

I read loads of reviews on all of the FZ series, and it was never mentioned as far as I can remember.

As Gabriel provided some info, I'll only say that I have an FZ20, and that I think it does a real good job.  Smile Only a few of my FZ20 shots are on a.net so far, as it is a fairly new camera to me.

The best part: 12x zoom and 5MP. Big grin

I used a certain amount of zoom for the photo on the left, but still had enough zoom left to fit the white Fokker in the frame in the photo on the right.
