Teleconverter: Camera Body's Or Lense's Brand?

Thu May 26, 2005 10:49 pm

Hi all,

When you have, say, a Canon D300/Rebel with a Sigma lens and you intend to get a teleconverter: Is it (generally speaking) advisable to buy a converter of the same brand as the camera body or do you match the converter brand with that of the lens?

Thanks for taking the time to reply,

Markus.

Markus

Personaly, I would stick with a Canon converter, than go for the cheaper alternative. When I was getting my lenses I was advised to stick with the Canon as I was getting Canon L lenses. Fitting a converter will cause your lens to loose a stop or two, depending which one you get, 1.4 = -1 stop and x2 = -2 stops. However you may need to check whether the Canon converter will fit onto the Sigma lens. My Sigma 24-70 f2.8 DG EX won't fit onto my Canon 1.4 converter, not that I wanted to but I was just messing around the other day and found that it won't go. As for the other larger Sigma lenses you may have to get that checked out.

Take care

I would get a converter that maches the lens i.e Sigma converter for Sigma lens and Canon converter for Canon lens.

Thanks guys.

2 replies, 2 differing opinions. - This is going to be interesting...

I realize that in the 1st place it's most probably a matter of which converter has the better technical specifications, but could one have (for example) a greater likelihood of causing the dreaded "error 99" or passing incorrect readings to the cam's display or other technical/electronic issues?

Looking forward to finding out which opinion wins.

Markus.

Staffan is probably right here, as I said in my first reply, you will have to check which converter fits your lens before buying. I have a feeling that the Canon converter won't fit the Sigma lens.

Take care

I see. I had never thought that chances are that it could not fit simply because it can not be mounted.
Well thanks for your help, guys, I'll see a local store tomorrow to get one.

With convertors you can only use a prime lens with a focal length of 135mm or greater. Any lens with focal below this will not work as the element sits too far back and will hit the convertor.

For zooms it is possible to use a convertor with a focal length as short as 70mm at the wide end of a zoom. Lenses such as 70-200's will work but a 24-70 will not.

In terms of what to get. I have a sigma 120-300 and it works great with my canon 1.4xII. I would reccomend canon's.

However with some of the third party convertors you can get AF to work with lenses with apertures of F5.6 or more.

An example of this is the tamron pro 1.4x and the kenko 1.4x which both reportedly AF with the 100-400 on a 1.6 crop body.

This is specualtion however, i have only used the canon myself and i will stick with them as they seem to be the best.

Any more questions, feel free to email me.

Beware Sigmas. You could lose AF and some camera functions. If I could afford it (at the moment, having recently got a 300D) I'd get the genuine article, but I've just ebayed a cheaper one (Jessops) to have a go with my 400mm (Tokina) and see how it goes.

The EF 80-200 2,8 L will not fit on a Canon converter.

Really? I have heard of several people on FM.com using it successfully with one. Maybe it is one from a tamron or sigma though.

Yes, that old one has rear elements too far rear to fit.

The Canon converters (1.4x & 2x) will not work with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens either, they physically won't fit.

Guys,

thanks to all for your opinions, that was some interesting reading. I'll surely bug the salesman some more tomorrow and I'll also ask if I can try both before making the decision.
