Lense For Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D)

Tue May 31, 2005 9:07 am

I just happened to acquire a Digital Rebel XT and I need a good 300mm lense.
And i presume this will mount on my 350D?
I found this:

At b&h and was wondering if its worth getting? I dont want to stretch my budget past $500.

I just want a general opinion if i should buy it and if not what other lense to get with comparable zoom for the same amount of cash?

Sounds good, is it enough zoom on most occasions?

This is my first DSLR so I am kind of lost  Silly

Hi Peter,

it depends what airport you go to but generally speaking 300mm is good enough. That's what I use and I'm pretty happy with the zoom I get from my lens.

This is a very good general purpose lens, and is a step up from the cheap plastic mount lenses that Canon offers. However, I found it to be soft at 300mm. If you could stretch your budget a little further, I think you'd be happier with the quality of the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM. You can usually find it sub-$600 online. Here is one example:

Thing im worried about is I shoot at ORD alot, where zoom is necessary. Therefore the 200mm is probably not good enough. Soon I will be relocating to DAB so that will be that

I do have 860 photos in the database so Im not a beginner here hahaha. I just need to hear some kind of feedback and support that im not blowing $500 for nothing.

BTW Phil, definately something I will look into though

Also keep in mind that your 350D has a 1.6x multiplication factor already, so that 200mm is effective ~320mm. Just food for thought.

cheers,

I had that lens and used it on my 300D. Gave pretty good results and the IS is an added bonus. Since you are budget minded, you made the right choice. I, on the other hand, sold the 300D and 75-300 IS and got a 350XT and the 70-200 f/4 L-series. Bad move - now all I want is L-this and L-that. Bad news. Tax return only comes once a year and the regionals pay their pilots crap. Oh well, I'll have to be happy wtih what I have for the next, oh twenty years . . .
